Well, I think the producers may have had their tongue in their cheek, but I don't know that it frequently came across any different in the ads. I wouldn't say the Evil Dead ad looks any more sincere than say:

This looks like every bad modern supernatural horror movie with some blood thrown in, and The Evil Dead title thrown on. I'm really, really bummed about this one.

There's a bit of showboating from the demons in the first two Evil Dead movies if you think about it. Ash gets taunted a lot and then tend to toy with him a bit.
