So it looks like this is being prepped for a German Blu-ray release, but it you read the comments from the guy working on it, he intends to use DNR to get rid of the grain.

I dig this movie and would gladly retire my old VHS if it got a decent Blu-ray (or even DVD) release, but I can't say that based on the comments in that thread that this is going to be it.

That looks like shit, and that Krekel guy doesn't seem too concerned with that. I like the film too, but no dice.

I like this film an awful lot too. I seem to recall that I've got a widescreen version someplace, though I could be mistaken; wasn't it released on LaserDisc? It'll be disappointing if this Blu-ray release isn't done right.

EDIT: The LaserDisc copy I have is not widescreen, but a reasonably good presentation of the film nonetheless.

That was a horrifying read. That idiot should be banned from touching film elements for life.

"Well, I for one was curious enough to buy this, and sure enough the picture quality is awful. Thick overzealously-applied DNR, and a hellishly low bitrate during the space sequences that means banding occurs at pretty much every shot. A real missed opportunity, and if the upcoming US release features the same interviews* and a better presentation/encode, I may well be tempted to double dip."

Krenkel confirms in that thread that the upcoming US release will use the same master.

                    YUCK.

"Olive Films just announced Billy Wilder's Fedora coming to DVD & Blu-ray on 10/28/14. Moontrap (starring Bruce Campbell and Walter Koenig) coming to DVD & Blu-ray on 11/4/14. In regards to Moontrap it appears that Olive has taken note of the issues with the German version as the announcement states " Moontrap was remastered in HD by Olive Films in 2014 specifically for this release".
