Yeah I saw it. I enjoyed it more than the first Iron Girl but that's not saying much. Didn't improve the production values much but she gains a new weapon this time around which resembles a samurai sword light sabre. Goes a bit more into her past and Asuka shows off her boobies quite a bit with a handful of simulated sex scenes. This will definitely be a trilogy. I ended buying the Chinese blu ray because it was real cheap and needed a filler to get free shipping.

Sounds like your standard Japanese direct to video action movie.

A friend of mine went to a Sion Sono talk show event today. According to him, Sono said Shinjuku Swan 2 is out next year and sucks Sono's next two movies are supposed to be Whispering Star 2 and Dracula (mind you, Sono is the Japanese Tarantino when it comes to changing plans).

I don't remember who it was, but someone on twitter said that the sooner Japanese trailers stop advertising movies as "xxxxxxxx ENTERTAINMENT!", the better. That's so true.

You know what else pisses me off? The fact that every other action movie released in Japan is called "xxxxxxxx MISSION". Since 2013:

Wild Speed: Euro Mission (Fast & Furious 6) (2013)
Last Mission (3 Days to Kill) (2014)
Into the Mission (2047: Sights of Death) (2014)
Expendables III: World Mission (Expendables III) (2014)
Wild Speed: Sky Mission (Furious Seven) (2015)
                  Hitman: Last Mission (Absolution) (2015)
                  Criminal Mission (Criminal Activities) (2015)
                  X Mission (Point Break) (2015)
Library Wars: The Last Mission (2015)
Expendable Mission (A Hitman in London) (2015)
Mechanic: World Mission (Mechanic: Resurrection) (2016)

Then there's Mission: Impossible of course...

Don Brown on Nobuhiro Yamashita's Over the Fence:
                    http://www.asahi.com/ajw/articles/AJ201609090001.html

Oh, and I finally saw Linda Linda Linda on 35mm a week ago, which was a total joy. It's the rare Japanese mainstream debut by an indie filmmaker that isn't a compromise or a total sell-out. It feels totally Yamashita while at the same time being perfectly mainstream and having solid production values. The last 30 min has a couple of moments I don't entirely like (Ramones, crowd reaction) but otherwise it's almost perfect.

Although I could not stay till the end of the event, it was great finally seeing Aki Maeda live after the film. She was a charming girl at the time of filming in 2004, and now 12 years later she's become an equally charming and beautiful 31 year old woman.

Any of you guys seen DESTRUCTION BABIES? I think it's making the festival rounds here in the West. From Tetsuya Mariko of YELLOW KID fame. Supposed to be a violent slice of life story of disillusioned youth.

I thought I replied to this already, but I guess not...

Anyway, a few years ago I would have probably watched that. Now I'm just sick and tired of Japanese indie and handsome young actors playing gritty violent roles. I've seen the trailer a few times and it just doesn't spark my curiosity. Maybe the film is better.

I went ahead and watched this. In a nutshell: violence is a disease; repeat 25 times over 108 minutes. Or, Yí»ya Yagira picking up fights with random people and Masaki Suda getting his kicks out of it. Something rotten in our society.

Many people have given this high marks. Kinema Junpo voted it as the 4th best JP film of 2016. I felt it had its moments, but frankly had hard time making it to the end. Perhaps I missed something. I felt the film had a message, but very, very little else.

The tagline "The most extreme 108 minutes in Japanese cinema history" is half-accurate not in terms of how graphic it is, but in terms of how long the violence goes on.

Japan Box Office Climbs 8% in 2016 Boosted by Local Hits
                              - http://variety.com/2017/film/asia/ja...ts-1201969383/

"The number one film at the 2016 box office was “Your Name,” which has also set a record for the top-earning Japanese film ever internationally, with $290 million at last count. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” with $102.5 million was the second ranked film of the year and the top scoring Hollywood movie. In third was Japan's “Shin Godzilla” with $72 million."

The success of Your Name is insane. It's currently no. 1 at the box office... five months after it opened. Toho is also releasing it nationwide with English subtitles this month (they could've done that 5 months ago, though).

Thanks for taking one for the team. I'm still interested in checking this out. I really enjoyed his student film effort, YELLOW KID.

Also want to check out Koji Fukuda's latest, HARMONIUM. Heard nothing but good things about this one and the good news is that Eureka is supposed to release later his year as part of its MoC series.
