caught a kung fu/wuxia double header with Jimmy Wang-yu's FOUR REAL FRIENDS first up. This one is a "brotherhood" martial arts themed flick with 4 men from different backgrounds who come together to battle a common enemy. Unfortunately, it's not very good. None of the good guys are very sympathetic and Jimmy Wang-yu is probably the least likable of the bunch & the action is just so-so. Chen Sing is the one that garnered the most screen time with his backstory about turning into a drunkard & coward after killing a guy and it's the love of a inn hostess, who used to be a whore who turns him around. The fight scene in the chicken coop was the lone highlight and you do get to see Wang-yu utilize his feet more than usual but that's it for the positives.
Next up was Sammo Hung's MOON WARRIORS. A big name cast with Andy Lau, Maggie Cheung, Anita Mui, etc but it was also very mediocre. The location (the fishing village) was absolutely beautiful as was the cinematography & musical score but the story and action left me wanting. The highlight was the "Free Willy" moment -- I can't recall another wuxia/martial arts flick that features a killer whale?! It's pretty bizarre but it's actually the only thing that separates this flick from being even worse than just an also-ran.
