Choking Victim - Tompkins Square Park 8-5-18

Tompkins Square Park, located in the East Village in Manhattan, has long been a sight the locals associate with politics and activism. There were anti-war protests there in the sixties, and in the eighties it became a de facto homeless camp and was ripe with drug problems. In 1988, the cops came in and tried to oust the homeless that were living there. This resulted in a now fairly infamous riot, clips of which did wind up on newscasts around the New York City area. When it was a...

The Damned - 40th Anniversary Tour - Warsaw, Brooklyn NY 5-23-2017

The Damned (with support from California's The Bellrays) took the stage last night in Brooklyn at the Warsaw concert theater in front of a sold out crowd. The date that had to be rescheduled after guitarist Captain Sensible tumbled off the stage and did some damage to his ribs towards the end of the Toronto show earlier on the tour. While the good Captain was put away in the hospital for a spell after the incident, you'd have never known it last night. He played with the energy and e...

  • Rock! Shock! Pop! At Five Points Fest - New York City, NY May 20th & 21st 2017

Rock! Shock! Pop! At Five Points Fest - New York City, NY May 20th & 21st 2017

The first, of what will hopefully be a recurring Five Points Festival kicked off yesterday at Pier 36 on the Lower East Side riverfront of New York City. The two day festival, curated by Clutter Magazine and presented Midtown Comics, “is a collision of toys, comics, and counterculture.” Unlike a regular comic or toy convention, Five Points focuses the more artisanal aspect of the toy and comic industry. As such, most of the attendees had a connection to indy or small...

    R!S!P! At NYCC 2016 - Comics!

Despite all the cosplay, movie stars, TV stars, toys, video games and other assorted stuff, comic books are what started all of this and comic books remain, for some of us at least, the most important part of an event like NYCC. As such, we've saved the best for last. All the big publishers are, as per the norm, setup in the main hall. Marvel had a lot going on this year, like they always do, promoting Black Panther and Doctor Strange in a big way this year.

    R!S!P! At NYCC 2016 - Toys!

Everyone likes toys, right? Another big part of what makes NYCC such a rad event to go to are, yeah, the toys! While there are some dealers who peddle vintage stuff but a large part of the focus is on 'the new stuff' and the 'stuff you want but can't buy yet.' There was a lot of that this year, probably more than last year, with big players like Sideshow, NECA and Previews Select displaying some really impressive sculpts, prototypes and finished products. And of co...

Carcass With Crowbar, Ghoul & Night Demon - Gramercy Theater, NYC 8-04-2016

Carcass With Crowbar, Ghoul & Night Demon - Gramercy Theater, NYC 8-04-2016 The second to last night of the One Foot In The Grave tour stopped in Manhattan last night at the Gramercy Theater for a sold out show. Night Demon were up first, but 'the man' would let me off work in time to check out there set, which was disappointing because their album, Curse Of The Damned, is really good and by all accounts, so is their live show. Ghoul, touring in support of their l...

Corrosion Of Conformity With Mothership & Polygamist - Live At St. Vitus 4-14-2016

Brooklyn's St. Vitus played host, last night, to a triple threat of metal from across the spectrum in one of this week's shows honoring the venue's fifth year in business. First up were the burrough's native sons, Polygamist. George Souleidis, one of the bar's owners, fronts this three piece and they opened the night with a solid set of sludgy, stoner metal with Souleidis expressing some pretty sincere gratitude to everyone in attendance for supporting the bar in the first...

  • King Diamond With Exodus Live In New York City, The Playstation Theater, November 21st 2015.

King Diamond With Exodus Live In New York City, The Playstation Theater, November 21st 2015.

King Diamond, currently playing the classic Abigail album in full on this 2015 tour, played the third and final night of run of shows at the Playstation Theater in Times Square last night to a sold out crowd. Exodus, now reunited with vocalist Steve "Zetro" Souza, opened up the night with a ridiculously tight set and they did a great job of working the crowd up for the main event. Souza sounded great and had a lot of energy, as did the rest of the band. Kragen Lum ...

NYCC 2015 Part One - Walking The Floor Show

Last week New York City once again played host to the biggest pop culture gathering on the East Coast if not the entire country. From Thursday through Sunday fans of movies, TV, gaming, toy collecting, anime, movies and yes, comic books, gathered en masse to celebrate geek culture in all its many forms. R!S!P! was there and over the next few days we'll be posting a few different Comic Con galleries - this one is the first, and it's basically a look at the size and scope of...

Ash Vs. The Evil Dead At NYCC 2015

Ok, so at the New York Comic Con this weekend, Staz had a big promotional thing going on to hype the debut of Ash Verus The Evil Dead later this month. It was kind of neat the way they did it - they setup a life size replica of 'Ash's Trailer' outside on the inner road way. Basically you got to stand in line for the chance to wander through.... a trailer. But it was still fun. Some pictures from that.

Looking Back: The Sex Pistols Invade Texas - Sex Pistols live at Randy's Rodeo, January 8, 1978

Text And Photographs By Russ Joyner
January 8, 1978 seems like a hell of a long time ago, but I truly can remember events just like it was yesterday. Recently I discovered a YouTube clip and it brought back a flood of those memories, from a period in my life that I thought was all but lost to time. The video featured the Sex Pistols playing the song, New York, from their infamous appearance at Randy's Rodeo in San Antonio, Texas, the third stop on the

Cock Sparrer With Murphy's Law & 45 Adapters Live In Brooklyn 4-10-15

Last night, UK street punk legends Cock Sparrer played their first New York City show in fifteen years at The Warsaw in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to a sold out capacity crowd. To say that the band was welcomed with open arms would be an understatement but before they took the stage, there were the two opening acts.

First up were 45 Adapters, a local Brooklyn band made up of “five friends who dress well and drink heavily.” They play a pretty straight

  • Gwar With Corrosion Of Conformity And American Sharks - Live At Irving Plaza, New York City - November 30th, 2014.

The GWAR ETERNAL tour, the band's first without legendary late front man Oderus Urungus, started out a few weeks ago and last night it came to Manhattan, Irving Plaza to be precise. The evening was kicked off right with an all too short set from Austin Texas' American Sharks, a killer three piece that play fast and tight and who ripped through most of their debut album in what seemed like no time at all. Make a point of seeing these guys if they

Rock! Shock! Pop! At Special Edition NYC 2014

It doesn't seem like all that long ago that comic book conventions were exactly that - a bunch of people getting together to buy, sell, trade, discuss and celebrate the art form with liked minded individuals and fans. And while a lot of smaller conventions still hold true to this concept, it seems that more often than not these days the larger conventions are about a whole lot more than comics. Despite being called The San Diego Comic Con or The New York Comic Con, large shows...

The Nutty Professor At 50! Jerry Lewis At The Friars Club, New York City - June 5th, 2014.

In honor of this week's 50th Anniversary Special Edition Blu-ray release of Jerry Lewis' The Nutty Professor (read our review here), Warner Brothers hosted a press conference with the man himself at the world famous Friars Club in the middle of Manhattan. Originally intended to be moderated by Brett Ratner, scheduling conflicts dictated that none other than Larry King take his place. Considerably more spry and quick witted than probably any other man his age, a smiling
