In my household, this series is known as BATMAN: TINY TOONS EDITION. That said, I've watched all three episodes so far, and here's my reaction so far:
The first one kind of sucked. There was some silly camerawork, some of the performances were bad (while others were terrific), and the story was a little too 'out there.' I found myself not caring about anyone, especially Jim Gordon. But the worst thing about it is just how corrupt the GCPD is. I mean, I like a good '70s-inspired corrupt police force in a series, but we aren't in the '70s, and it just didn't ring authentic. Yes, of course there are bad officers, and of course there are bad police departments, but I doubt that, in the United States, there are many that are THIS OBVIOUS!!!
The second episode was a major improvement. Bullock was played as too much of a badass at times, but other than that, it had a lot going for it. If anything, however, the lack of humor was a bit of a problem. I'm not saying it should have been a comedy or anything (that would have been terrible), but some black humor would have been nice. All that said, Fish Mooney and The Penguin are beautifully realized, terrifying characters.
The third episode was superb. If the rest of the series is this good, it's going to be grrrrrrrrrrreat! It was gritty, with a strong sense of black humor. The actors seem to have found their characters and settled into them nicely. And there was a lot more of Alfred and Bruce, which is a good thing. (This interpretation of Alfred as a grizzled war vet is pitch perfect.) I also like the lesbian subplot between Montoya and Barbara.
The violence is pretty extreme for the 8:00 hour, but the show comes with a TV14 rating. Now to see how THE FLASH fares tonight.
