That was disappointing as I was planning on enjoying this. It's not very Grindhouse for those worrying about that. No print damage, occassional cigarette burns and some heavy vignetting but that's it. Fairly bloody actually though black and white blood lacks some impact.

It gives you the idea that it's going to be an old Universal movie but actually the MCU is still very much the core influence. Lots of fighting where our heroes flip and around and spin and fly which all feels very stale at this point. The odd thing though is how slow it is. Given the compressed runtime I was expecting something light and fast on its feet. Instead it's talky and episodic. Needed a clever twist or two but it's straight down the line with occassional MCU wisecracks.

I don't know, the reviews are cracking. I may just be old.

I thought this was fun. About what I expected, honestly. I hung out with some comic nerd friends this morning, all of whom were gushing about it. They liked it more than I did, but I did enjoy it. I thought Man-Thing looked great, the werewolf looked pretty cool. It was done way out of continuity and didn't really have anything to do with the original WBN comic from the 70s (which I kinda love) so that was disappointing but I had 45 minutes of fun with it. Will it change your life? Fuck no, but if you don't dislike the MCU stuff or are, like me, reasonably indifferent to most of it (though I've got to admit She-Hulk is making me laugh a lot), you'll probably at least be entertained, even if, yes, there are plenty of plot holes and what not.

Why they didn't just title this The Adventures of Elsa Bloodstone or something like that is a mystery.

Man-Thing was great, and there was so little of the titular Werewolf that I am considering suing for false advertising.

I'm guessing the B&W was to tone down the blood and maybe to justify the 30's style title card, but this really should have been in color throughout. Anyway...

If I had to quantify my level of Marvel Comics knowledge, I'd say that on a scale of 1 to 10 I'm a steady 5. Most of what I know comes from the 80's Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe so any Easter eggs in this that come from the 90's and after would go right over my head, assuming there were any. I know about the Bloodstones, and Man-Thing and the titular Werewolf of course but if any of the other characters in this short film come from the comics I sure as fuck don't recognize them - even after checking imdb for their names - and there are dozens of monsters listed in the OHOTMU yet what was hanging from the walls didn't give me any sort of fanboy thrills. If you can pull from decades of material, why just make new shit up? Feels like an excellent opportunity to go full-on into geeky fan service but instead it's like the non-licensed section of the Don Post mask catalog on the wall. Maybe Marvel/Disney is just being super cautious with whom they choose to include for fear of creators coming out of the woodwork to get some residuals.

That said, I wouldn't mind a MONSTERS UNLEASHED movie with Werewolf By Night and Man-Thing traveling around, saving other creatures from monster hunters. That could be fun. More fun than this.

Manphibian was on the wall! And there were quite a few other Easter Eggs in there.

But yeah, most of the human characters were new, but they really only existed to get killed off.

I saw this as a way to introduce some of the darker, horror stuff into the MCU.

Given how popular Rocket and Groot are I'd say a Howard The Duck/Man-Thing show or one-off Special could work. Make Howard a Kolchak type character.

Apparently, they used no footage of that puppet version in the finished film, which is a real shame because it's cool as hell.

It's such an odd phenomenon to me that we see Man-Thing onscreen for all of five minutes, yet his online popularity has skyrocketed since this special came out. He's been around for 5 decades in comics (I don't think many people have dared to sit through the 2005 feature) but in the last two weeks I've seen images of the character pop up regularly in my Instagram feed and of course his early comic book appearances have doubled and tripled in value based on a small "live action" cameo. It's got the Groot/Baby Yoda factor - people just dig these nearly silent yet emotive creatures I guess

Mondo made a pretty nice poster for this (though I admit I'm a mark for Francesco Francavilla's artwork).
