  • HBO's The Deuce

So HBO is releasing this next year, it's a drama about the porn industry in 70s New York.

To the best of my knowledge, the first footage from the series pops up in this HBO 2017 promo reel.

James Franco stars and I'm fairly certain this is the series that the people behind the Rialto Report were brought in as advisers on.

I'd check that out for sure. And new Curb Your Enthusiasm? All over HBO.

Yep this is the one the Rialto Report peeps consulted on. Also stars Maggie Gyllenhaal.

I've never seen The Wire, I don't have HBO but I have read most of George Pelecanos' books & they're good.

You should totally remedy that. Still the best thing ever made for tv.

I watched the pilot, and I think this is off to a good start. It has the usual pilot tendency to not go much of anywhere, but that sort of is to be expected when a series is busy setting up the characters, the milieu and establishing the time period. Both James Franco and Maggie Gyllenhaall seem like good fits for their respective roles, and the setting is nicely realised, albeit with some really obvious CGI in the wider shots of Times Square (just a few times in the first episode).

                        EDIT:
Oh, and a certain Argento giallo makes an appearence on a movie theatre marquee, although (intentionally?) misspelled.

Watched the pilot last night and really enjoyed it. They did a really nice job of recreating era and everything has a nice patina to it. I especially geeked out on the marquees and posters that were in frequent view.

Same. Really liked it. And it does a much better job of creating that atmosphere than VINYL did.
