I still really dig the original series. It's crazy colorful and wacky enough to work. What came after it.... I can enjoy the Next Generation here and there as it had a great cast and some good writers. After that, though, I stopped paying attention.
I'm looking forward to the new series, I was wondering what took them so long. They are sitting on a goldmine of a franchise. Those last two films from Abrahms sucked and I don't consider them part of the Star Trek cannon.
But all the TV shows have a special place in my heart, as well as the films.
The potential to do a new series in the vein of current TV shows is very enticing. I would love if they created season long story arcs, just like most TV shows nowadays, rather than the episodic style we are used to from past series. Even change the characters every season and give us new slices into the ST universe, like American Horror Story. I hope they are creative with it, but not mess with the specially built universe too much.
Season long arcs are so standard these days it would feel really dated if they didn't go that way. Totally new characters every season is a good idea but I doubt they'd have the sf writing chops to pull that off.
