  • Starz Bringing Neil Gaiman's American Gods To TV!

    Source!

"ong promised but never realized, Neil Gaiman's American Gods (arguably his best novel) is getting the cable TV series treatment. At one point, HBO had planned American Gods as a series of six 10-12 episode seasons, but it never quite materialized. Back in February of 2014, Freemantle Media picked up the rights, and the project found a home at Starz in 2014 with Bryan Fuller (Heroes, Hannibal) and Michael Green (who is going to be very busy the next few years with Blade Runner 2, Wolverine 3, and Prometheus 2 on his menu) as showrunners.

And now, finally, Starz has given the series the greenlight, and the casting process will begin shortly. Well, according to the chat we had with Bryan Fuller, some casting has already begun, with an offer out to one actor in particular, and a diverse cast overall being sought. Read all about that right here.

Michael Green and Bryan Fuller issued a joint statement:

“Almost 15 years ago, Neil Gaiman filled a toy box with gods and magic and we are thrilled to finally crack it open and play. We're grateful to have STARZ above us and FremantleMedia at our backs as we appease the gods, American or otherwise."

For those unfamiliar with American Gods, here's the official synopsis:

The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of biblical and mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society's modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities. Gillian Anderson has been added to the cast too, solidifying the Hannibal connection a bit more I guess.

I enjoyed it. I read the book 15 years ago but can't recall too much about it, so can't vouch for how close the two are. Ian McShane is great as usual and Ricky Whittle makes a good lead.

I'm 4 episodes in, and other than McShane being fantastic, I just can not get into it.

From writer-producers Bryan Fuller (“Hannibal”) and Michael Green (“Heroes”) and based on Neil Gaiman's international best-selling novel, “American Gods” Season One is a visual feast focusing on an ex-convict named Shadow Moon, and his sudden introduction into a power struggle between the Old and New Gods. “American Gods” Season One stars Ricky Whittle (“The 100”), Ian McShane (John Wick: Chapter 2, “Game of Thrones”), Emily Browning (Sucker Punch, Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events), Pablo Schreiber (13 Hours, “Orange Is the New Black”), Peter Stormare (John Wick: Chapter 2, Fargo), and pop culture icon Gillian Anderson (“The X-Files,” “Hannibal”).

Left adrift by the recent, tragic death of his wife, and suddenly hired as Mr. Wednesday's bodyguard, Shadow finds himself in the center of a world that he struggles to understand. As Shadow travels across the country with Mr. Wednesday, he struggles to accept this new reality, and his place in it.
