  • [QUOTE=Mark Tolch;63506]The bottom pic is from the Protest against the Decline of Morals in Society.
    [B]
"When it opened in October 1969, Cinema 2000 found a way to slip through a loophole in the current censorship laws by showing films on videotape, which was not subject to censorship by the Ontario Board of Censors. Nevertheless, obscenity charges were filed against the theatre for showing the films commercially. Despite three separate legal proceedings and $40,000 in legal fees, the Court ruled in favour of Cinema 2000, making it the first cinema to win a sex censorship case in Canada.

Mark, Thanks for posting the pictures.

(In case, it hasn't been mentioned) Cinema 2000 was a movie house without a screen. People watched the films off of TV monitors, suspended every few rows, over the seats.

                    • It's Toronto and not really a grindhouse theater but still a rad picture that sort of fits here.

                      • The Carlton Cinema. Still open, and still plays a lot of indie flix...and still charges 7 bucks a ticket, 5 bucks on Tuesdays. I should go back there and see something.

Edit: Just found out that though it's in the same building, it's not the same theatre. The theatre there has now been open since 1981.

Are they lined up to see the movie or to go to Maple Leaf Gardens?

I saw Much Ado About Nothing there last weekend (salright). Cineplex-sized screen and theatre, digital projection, but only slightly more expensive than staying home.

                          • There's a pretty great article here about the theaters that were on Younge St. in the 1970s. Wish there were more pictures.
