I never did get to love that Nikon D610. I never got tpast the sensation that it was a professional sensor in a consumer body. This week I finally replaced it with a Nikon D850. The finest DSLR yet crafted by the hand of man. It's a significant investment but I figured I needed a back up body anyway and had been playing fast and loose by relying on one camera for so long.

Only had one shoot with it so far- though it was 7 hour long portrait session- but I'm in love. it just feels like a camera where everythings been thought through. The viewscreen on the back of the camera is beautiful so I don't have to keep explaining to clients that the images with look better on a computer. The resolution is as high as I can imagine being useful. The autofocus is superfast and trustworthy. Even the noise it makes when you click the shutter.... It's a thing of beauty.

Yes, once you're in and you start collecting lenses it's hard to switch. But I don't feel bad on this one as I feel Nikon has the best camera going at the moment in the d850 anyway. I have friends who are in the canon camp though and they are not happy campers.

Todays acquistions! This little camera is awesome. 12 bit Cinema DNG RAW out of a camera that weighs less than 400 grams! And because it got superseeded recently I picked it up for a mere $450AUD. I'm gearing up at the minute so that later this year I can shoot my sci/fi, romantic comedy, hard core porno feature film. I did covet the new version of this camera, which is 4k, but it's also 900 grams. I'm planning on shooting the entire feature on a gimbal. I can hold a 900 gram camera and lens and external monitor etc on a gimbal for a while but it's unrealistic to think I can do that for a full 14 hour shoot day. So this is the best option. And I can always upscale to 4k in resolve which is much better up upscaling than your tv. I'm sure no one will be any wiser.

I've shot very little video- despite doing a few features I've never been the DOP. But I'm excited to get into learning something new.

You got a deal on that. Around here even the slightly older Black Magic models go for $800 and up.

Yeah, I think they are $1,300 here but this one was second hand. It doesn't really appear to have been used. The silver paint on the edges of the camera scuff up super quick and this one looks almost like new so I'm happy. I'm probably going to want to have 2 or 3 on set so used makes most sense.

Does it take stills? I haven't really gotten into it yet so I didn't even know that. It would be a poor stills camera. All the controls are for video rather than stills (shutter angle rather than shutter speed etc). Even if it does shoot stills it would be too awkward for me to use for that.

As a video camera the sensor is tiny on the bmpcc so the crop factor is huge (times your lens focal length by almost 3 times!) which makes it hard to get wide though the depth of field isn't as grim as I thought it would be. I did consider using the d850 for my film but the weight (with lens almost 2kilo versus 600grams) counted it out for me. I will also be shooting a lot of green screen for this film and the d850, even with an external recorder, can only shot 10bit 4.2.0. I'm just concerned about consistently pulling a good key from that. Particularly as I'm shooting shagging on the green screen and I imagine there will be a lit of loose hair etc and I was keen to keep it as easy for myself as possible.

Ah, I thought that line did stills and video, but maybe I'm wrong on that.

Just put in an order for one of these the BMPCC 4k because, hell, you can never have too many cameras. The original BMPCC just feels a little... flakey. Too many corners have been cut I think. This will require a slight aesthetic change to my film which I had been planning to shoot entirely on a gimble. No way I'm gimballing this thing through a 14 hour shoot day. So a tripod is the next purchase. But 4k RAW! Not too shabby.
