Without doubt the absolute sexiest camera release in all of history. Photographers love to tell you that the camera doesn't matter but they say that while slinging around their $50,000 Hasselblad. Truth is cameras matter hugely. They're aren't many though that are so revolutionary that they change the medium.
I think, for low budget filmmaking, this one will.
I first became aware of this camera last week. This camera changes everything for low budget film making. Over the next few years you're going to notice that low budget look a lot more dynamic and interesting than they have in the past. There's going to be a lot of floating camera work as jobs that would in the past have taken huge amounts of time and manpower all of a sudden can be done with literally one hand.
On a low budget movie set movement is always the hardest thing. If you don't mind your film looking like the Bourne Ultimatum then I guess its probably easier but if your not a fan of motion sickness it's not easy. Moving a camera smoothly is just a nightmare. On my first film, pre gimbals or any of that, a moving camera meant laying tracks. It would take ages to set up, you'd do the shot and say 'okay we're moving on' only to have your camera operator complain about a bump in the middle of the dolly and then your waiting half an hour while it gets resolved.
But even moving people in a shot sucks. All of a sudden the whole camera team is huddled round the camera with tape measures and pens and they start drawing on your rental lens to mark focus points and then when you do the shot the actor stops 5 centimetres forward of where they're supposed to be and everythings out of focus.
Movement sucks for low budget which is why low budget films are often so static. I know by the time I was making my third feature I just eliminated as much of it as I could. It wasn't worth it.
This camera makes one man band shooting the easiest thing in the world. It makes me super antsy to get out and shoot something. This would be an amazing porno movie camera. You'd get footage that we've never seen before.
I'm just super excited about this thing. I can't afford it. I can't justify it. I want it anyway.
