I'm curious to see how sets and props evolve between now and when shooting starts.

Me too! Minor panics on that front. Watching lots of 60-70s scifi stuff for inspo: Tenth Victim, Frightened Woman, Clockwork Orange, etc.

The dream of building my own sets has been shelved. My partners studio is not available on the dates we'd need to set up the spaces and to do it in a pro studio feels dicey given this is not a legal venture here. Legally for this stuff we have the opposite situation to the US, prostitution is totally legal but you cant film it.

Fortunately Melbourne has a bit of a Singapore vibe these days. Lots of large apartments in 100 story towers that are above the cloud level. Those are going to be my main sets as they feel very scifi already. The plan is to cover anything modern, light switches etc, with scifi alternatives, rotoscope in some flying cars and stuff out the windows and then get in lava lamps etc for that 60s does scifi feel.

Was discussing this last night. It so happens I'm friendly with a trio of large, identical, affable- if extremely volatile and violent- Polish triplets. They seem to be a good stand in for Ron and there been 3 of them and identical looks like a special effect. Not sure if I can coax them in front of a camera but that scene does feature the character doing dialogue with a hot, naked chick so that has to be some incentive.

God damn! At some point I've just got to acknowledge this project is cursed.

Been tracking pretty well recently. Locked in some cool locations. One apartment on the hundredth floor, way up above the skyline, and then a supercool apartment with these round concrete pillars holding up the roof. Looks weird enough to be sci fi. Shoot dates set. Cast locked. Booked my equipment, got great deals on it. Girlfriend is killing it putting together sci fi props and costumes. Even got one of those Star Trek 3 dimensional chess sets.

Then, the fucking lead male pulls out. Worse, his partner is the 2nd lead female and so we lose her at the same time. Pretty pissed. No explanation as to why, no apology, just a 'we talked about it and decided not to to continue'.

What really pisses me off is this guy railroaded me into removing my first choice for the 2nd lead female and replacing her with his partner. So now I've had to go back to this lovely lady who I have screwed around- offering a role to and then removing it the next day- and ask her if she wants back in. Really pissed....

But, you know, that girl was my first pick for the role so if she's not holding a grudge against me then she'll be so much better in the role. And my lead femme has said that her partner is interested in coming on board. I know nothing about the chap beyond recieving a detailed description of his 'spectacular penis' but she's such a great woman I got to think her man would be pretty cool too. So maybe Im okay....

I don't know... Its possible I'm not... But maybe I am. Cest la vie.

Anyway... tried to calm my nerves by doing some of the masses of graphics work the film needs. My lead man works at a lovebot factory that's covered in advertising poster for the product and so I needed to make the posters to print and display. And so I made the posters today:

...and, whooo, back on track. That was a brutal couple of weeks. Met with my leading ladies partner who I signed up on the spot to replace my missing leading male. I didn't know a thing about him going into our meeting except for significant details about his junk. I expected a sex industry worker and spent the night before puzzling over lists of local male escorts trying to figure which one he would turn out to be. Turns out he's not industry, instead an independent IT consultant who works on military contracts. It's an odd career shift, I guess, but I'm here for it.

Finding a replacement for the female cast member though was tough. Tons of names out there of course but no one would write back to me because they don't know who I am. Apparently it's an odd thing to recieve a message in your inbox offering you $10k to come spend a couple days on a porno set and you'd be amazed how many people don't write back to that offer. I was about to start hustling agents in LA to fly someone over when I recalled one last name who I figured I had no shot with but what have I got to lose at this point.

Katija Cortez, a playboy playmate of the year and highly placed personage on FHMs hottest women in the world lists. Sent out a hail Mary and she wrote back in minutes and signed on after a quick Zoom meet. Finding it hard to believe this landed in my lap. Beyond perfect casting. Four foot eleven of bubbly, gregarious glamour. Bonus, my cast is no longer 100% white. My partner feels that's very important and she probably has a point.

I'm now a couple weeks behind on post production as I've been dealing with this so nose to the grindstone from here.

Just cast my last sex role, last one to cast because this character doesnt involve acting. Still got a bunch of nonsex roles to cast but they all get to keep their clothes on so I assume they're easier. Once again pulling a cast member from people I already know. I think so! What I'm super happy with is that the actors playing robots (Katija and Nyssa) have these perfectly sculpted bodies that you can absolutely believe were moulded in a factory while our human characters, while still being damn fine looking humans, are much more girl/boy next door in their body types. Even when casting with the larger talent pool in LA I never quite got that balance. Kira Noir, who was playing the human female lead in LA, looked she lived at the gym and it was always impossible to find someone who looked more perfect than her. Honestly, feeling a little intimidated for shooting a BGG threesome with Katija and Nyssa on just the second day. Katija 4 foot 11 and Nyssa is only like 5 foot 2 or something but they are big presences.

Katija asked if on the first two days on set she could bring someone to shoot behind the scenes so there will be something. I usually have a BTS person but I'm trying to keep the set super small. I don't want to attract any attention by having tons of people filing into an apartment and BTS was one that got the chop. I have been training my partner to use a camera though so hopefully she'll pick up a bunch of stuff on the day if she's not already overworked.

I'm typing this though and I'm thinking, hmm, a half hour bts documentary of doing this may have more value than the film itself. Shit, maybe I need something... I'll think on it.
