Yeah I always looked at it as less of a contract and more just a statement of intent. They're over there, I'm over here, it's basically impossible for either of us to sue each other for breach of contract.

It's a messy situation. Basically I'm in for the cost of the film no matter what but if an actor doesn't turn up, or fails their STI test the day before we shoot, then there's really nothing I can do. It's very precarious with a massive opportunity to fall on its face.

I think maybe the most annoying thing about losing my actress is I was doing all the storyboards with a character I made to look like her. Now I bet the role winds up being played by a pasty white girl with red hair and no tits and it's going to be very clear she was my second choice when she sees the storyboards featuring a large breasted black girl in a blonde wig. Saying that's most annoying thing is overstating it I suppose... but it is vexing.

Well, a number of women (and some men) are known as being flaky. It's not uncommon for someone to not show up and you have to shoot around them until they either do show up or get someone else to do the part. Fred Olen Ray has told the story of someone (wish I could remember her name) showed up for the first two days of the shoot on a three day shoot but never showed up on the third day. She just decided she didn't want to work on it anymore, and this was on a softcore movie.

Years ago, Jim Holliday wanted to make each girl pay a deposit to ensure they showed up. Needless to say, he quickly retreated after the uproar that happened over that idea.

We've actually got a producer contact in LA who works with them all who we consult with on that stuff. "You can't use her, she's always high. He can't get it up half the time. Her? She'll turn up but you'll wish she hadnt" etc. Not getting to meet them until a couple days before shooting it's pretty necessary.

Been casting pretty steadily over the last couple weeks. Mostly that involves watching ridiculous amounts of porn with the girlfriend, trying to divine who can act and who we'll enjoy spending time with from videos with titles like "Anal gape takes huge cock". It ain't easy or in any way logical... Casting a real movie we used to just get anyone interesting in, get a feel for them in person, have them read our lines. None of that's doable on a porno. A phone call or a couple emails is the best you can hope for. Plus we're dealing with their agents first who typically use pidgeon English and so we're constantly trying to disentangle even what it is they are trying to say.

On the plus side, it's a small and very busy industry. Want to know whether your 2 leads will have chemistry and play well together? Well, odds are strong you can be watching them have sex with one another within one google search. You can't do that on a Hollywood feaure!

Anyway, it's almost killed us, but we're finally almost there on the key central quartet as to Logan Pierce we add Emma Hix, Kira Noir and Seth Gamble. Still waiting on a confirmation from Seth but I feel good vibes. All are veterans. Emmas ridiculously hot. Kira, is hilarious and one of only a handful of stars I actually enjoying watching perform. And Seth is maybe the biggest male name in the industry and a damned fine comic performer. So... getting there.

Interesting read, thank you for sharing your story.
I would be interested in how you're planning to promote your finished movie? Do you have a specific target group?
You're drawing inspiration from the 70s/Golden age porn movies, narrative driven feature-length productions, a style that is in stark contrast to the modern hardcore pornography.
As you wrote even people within the industry pretty much forgot about their origin which of course reflects the consumers behavior/preferences.

Does it even make sense nowadays to target the average pornhub user with such a production? Misty Beethoven and the such probably rings a bell at cult movie communities like ours more than anywhere else.
Sounds like a complicated undertaking to me

                That ass...
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

Indeed! It's a tricky one. Ultimately I'm doing this as art piece. I love the script and I want to see the movie. If I lose all my money then I start again. I've had an empty bank account before. But I do want it to find an audience becaause then it's been a proper entrepenurial effort rather than just a hobby. Also this is kind of my statement about what porn should be. i think it's gone to a very depressing place. Some of the best evenings I've had involved settling down a bottle a cognac, some cigars, my woman and a good, say, Tegn movie. Once in a while people should be enjoying their porn like that and hopefully on the back of this a few people do.

You're right though, I don't think the average pornhub user has any interest in what I'm doing at all. They're not our market. I don't have a cohesive plan yet but things that occur to me:

-I'll be selling it through a dedicated website. $USD10 to download or stream it on the site $18 dollars for bluray/UHD.
-Every man I tell about this project says, "what the hell are you doing? You don't watch a whole film and if you do you're doing it wrong." Girls on the other hand are excited. They want to watch porn but they are repulsed by the front page at porn hub. Women love a raunchy comedy too. I think Lexx is probably the only sci fi series ever where the viewers were predominantly female. Barbarella similarly. I think that's my prime market. letting them know is going to be difficult.
-To break even I'll probablyneed to sell about 4,000 copies. Porns a universal language. There's 7,000,000,000 people in the world. I believe the markets there for something better.
-I'm going to be trying to be covered in the mainstream press. I'll get a publicist etc. Newspapers love to write about porn but they only have one story. How it's turning kids into porn addicts. Giving people body image issues and leading to a decline in people having sex overall. For Australian papers I think the idea of the first big scale Australian porno, that's the porn equivalent of family friendly, made by a couple locals who risked it all on a jaunt to LA with no experience at all is a story. I get one good article in a well distributed paper and I could be on my way. My second film got on the front of a newspaper and a bunch of my stage stuff has been covered inside at various times so it doesn't seem unrealistic.
-I've got a character who's like Mr Wilson in Home Improvement. You never see him but you do hear his voice. I want a high profile voice who's name will perk up the ears of mainstream audiences. i have an idea on that one...

Ultimately it's all about letting people know that's it's different which goes into the advertising. We've got a lot of plans for that. Illustrated posters. Infomercial videos from the future. Very unconventional trailers. That's stuff is going to be super fun but I don't let myself think about it too much at this point.

Thanks man! I do my best.

And finally the final piece of my central quartet locks in! That's a sexy cast... I'm so unbelievably pumped there are no words. I think this process has taken about 7 months since I contacted my first agent. Trying to plan the rest of my evening.... I'm supposed to play basketball on a Monday night, considering instead of maybe going to the bottleshop, buying a particularly nasty bourbon and wiping myself the fuck out.

Looks good Dom. The poster is evocative of Kubrick to me.

Thanks, and yeah, I stole his font. I want to start looking for an artist who does good illustrated posters for the real poster. Anyone have any recommendations? The British DVD labels often seem to ahve fun art on their covers. I guess it wouldn't be too hard to find who they are. I imagine it can't be too expensive because I can't see there being any money in DVD these days and new art would be a luxury expense for them.

Currently in a dialogue with Ron Jeremy's agent about him coming in for a dialogue role. Nothing more to add, just thought talking to The Hedgehogs agent was cool.

No actually, something more to add. I see he shares an agent with Lloyd Kaufman. I love Lloyd. Has Lloyd ever done a walk on in a porno... He'd be a commited member of SAG I suppose so that's probably not doable....

He hasn't appeared in any that I know of but he did direct some in his earlier days and he has used Ron in quite a few Troma movies over the years.

I forgot Lloyd directed porn back in the day... Just now I got another email from Rons agent. This one in response to the question of what Ron's rate is. The very succinct response: "I don't know. Make him an offer." FFS.
