  • RIP Allen Lanier

    Sad news from Blabbermouth.net:

"Founding BLUE í–YSTER CULT keyboardist and guitarist Allen Lanier died earlier today (Wednesday, August 14) of chronic lung disease. He was 66 years old.

Said the band in a statement: "We have extremely sad news to report. We've lost our friend and bandmate Allen Lanier. Allen succumbed to complications from C.O.P.D. [Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease]. He is survived by his wife Dory, sister Mary Anne and mother Martha. Although he retired from touring in 2006, Allen returned to the stage for what turned out to be his final appearance, reuniting with BLUE í–YSTER CULT at the 40th-anniversary show in New York this past November. I was only a casual fan but to be honest, never dug into their catalogue that much. I cant certainly see why they had the fan base they did though and would never deny their importance or influence.

Lots of hidden gems in those albums...

If you go to record shows, you can find a lot of their stuff dirt cheap...win win!!

Sorry to hear of this. I am glad I got to see BOC in their heyday - on the Fire Of Unknown Origin tour. He wrote or co-wrote some great songs too. In addition to the keyboards, he was part of that awesome guitar lineup they would do for Cities On Flame. Always thought he was one of the cooler members, didn't seem forced just came naturally, unlike a couple of the others.

Those first 3 albums are all essential, and so is a lot of the other stuff. Their music doesn't age one bit, it still sounds amazingly contemporary, unlike some of the other bands from the same time.

Man, bad day for this kind of news...hell, bad year for that matter.
I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons.

So glad I saw them on that crazy one off night where they reunited the classic lineup for the 40th anniversary in NYC.

Allen was a great musician and underrated songwriter.

            RIP.
