One of my favourite shows was Frank Black acoustic at a pub venue in London 2003. Very funny banter, he was telling people off for singing along and trying to remember how to tell the time on an analogue wrist watch that his brother had just given him.
I'm bitter, I'm twisted, James Joyce is fucking my sister.

    • That sounds amazing! He and some of the band members told some really funny stories too.

He used to have a guitarist in The Catholics who looked like Garth from Wayne's World who played a solo on an open string just by messing around with a tuning peg! Some of his solo/Catholics stuff is great, but there was so much of it and not enough QC. Which reminds me, I need to listen to the new Pixies CD. I like about half of the post reformation albums so far.

        • Not strictly speaking upcoming, we saw Pete(r) Doherty in Bristol last night.

For me, the guy is magic. A true one-off and it was great to see him in such good spirits. I was a little worried going in as he has played some recent shows seated, apparently due to ill heath. He was in fine form last night though. I hope he lives to be a hundred.

          • The remnants of DEVO in June at History in Toronto, a fantastic live venue owned by that Drake guy.

I saw DEVO for the first time a bunch of years ago for free at a music festival (they were amazing) and then at Punk Rock Bowling last year (amazing again), so I'm pretty jazzed to see them for what may be my last time.

I am jealous. I have wanted to see DEVO live since I was 5 years old!

They have been worth the price of admission (especially the time it was free) every time!

                  That’s what I’ve always heard.

                  • I'm gonna go see Conservative Military Image in Manhattan next Sunday. Should be fun. I expect a fairly fierce pit and am also kind of terrified of the singer, so I will probably stay in the back because I am old and frail.

Yeah, the pit was pretty brutal in Vegas, and that was a larger venue.

I bought tickets for 2 shows this week; one is the instrumental part of the Sex Pistols with Frank Carter singing Pistols tracks. I love the Pistols and Lydon, but I'm happy to see them in a small venue where Lydon doesn't overshadow the playing with his Lydonisms. In short, I'm stoked to stand on the Jonesy side of the stage with occasional trips up a few stairs to get a line of sight on Paul Cook drumming.

Also, got tickets to the Spider Stacy version of the Pogues, who are touring for the 40th anniversary of Rum, Sodomy and the Lash. I've seen Shane solo once, and regrettably did not see him with the Pogues, so this is one we're looking forward to, but in a sad kinda way with Shane and Phil gone.

Both of those tours are supposedly coming to NYC.

I'm passing on The Pogues, saw them 5 times with Shane and that's good enough for me.

The Sex Pistols thing... supposedly happening in Brooklyn in September but no date or venue announced yet. I'd go if it was cheap, because it would probably be fun, but I'm still not completely sold on the idea of the band without Lydon up front, even if he is a douchebag.

The Pistols are playing a big gig with The Stranglers and The Buzzcocks this summer a few miles down the road from me. It's great that these bands can still make a decent living doing this and I don't begrudge them it, but I'm just not feeling it, especially at a large venue. Even Lyndon isn't Lyndon these days so that's not the deal breaker for me.

Interesting to see that in the US they're billed as 'of the Sex Pistols' whereas they're billed as the Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter over here. I guess they're playing a delicate legal game with Lyndon on a territory by territory basis.

                          • Thinking of getting a crew together and heading out to Fyre Festival 2, who's in?

I think given the way it went last time, which admittedly was somewhat suboptimal, we should eschew the $1.1 million packages and play it safe with the $25k Create The Fyre tickets.

I really feel Billy MacFarland is due some success. Kid works so hard and all he gets is grief.

                            • I haven't been to many shows since the pandemic, but I'm planning to change that. The Spits will be playing two shows in Chicago, so that'll be fun and the venue isn't that bad.

True story: I saw Devo at the Armadillo World Headquarters in Austin, Texas on August 2, 1979.

At one point in the show, the band was wearing those goofy-looking (albeit iconic) red helmets and I was right at the front of the stage. Mark was particularly animated during the song and suddenly his helmet came off and landed right in my hands. Without even thinking, I handed it back to him, and he snatched it from me.

I almost regret not keeping it.

But here's a photo from that concert of one of the Casale brothers (Bob, I think, with a different helmet) to give you an idea of just how close I was to the stage.
