  • The Deep Purple Thread

I couldn't find a thread here about the greatest rock'n'roll band ever! "Machine Head", the greatest rock'n'roll record ever has been remixed and re-released! Here's an animated video for "Smoke on the Water".

I'm unfamiliar with their earliest work, aside from the song "Hush," but I love the Ian Gillan and David Coverdale eras. There are some great videos I've found on Youtube of them performing on various TV shows during the early 1970's. I can't imagine the thrill being a teenager in say Germany or Japan in 1973 and seeing these insane longhaired freaks pumping out "Speed King" or "Highway Star" on a live broadcast, followed by a commercial for toothpaste or whatever. Like a glimpse into a different reality or something.

This thread inspired me to put Fireball on, such a killer album.

I believe Lars Ulrich is quoted as saying this was his favorite album growing up.

Not sure what this is. A new album?

I'd think it has to be, there's been rumors of one for a while now.

Burn is probably my favorite, especially the live version from the 1974 California Jam.

Gillan confirmed it in an interview from a few weeks back.

I like this song too. It's hard not to play air guitar along with it!

"Portable Door" video! It sounds like classic Purple to me.

I also recently returned to listening to Deep Purple after a long break. I had stopped because I spent a lot of time around people learning to play guitar, and the first thing they would do is learn Smoke on the Water.

Isn't that what every new guitar player learns first?
