  • R.I.P. Vangelis

    He's passed away at 79.

"Vangelis, the Greek composer and musician whose synth-driven work brought huge drama to film soundtracks including Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, has died aged 79. His representatives said he died in hospital in France where he was being treated."

VANGELIS. As with most people, I first heard his name when I saw CHARIOTS OF FIRE in 1981. His ubiquitous theme was an immediate sensation. Still, for me, it was June 25th, 1982 when Vangelis became a musican legend. BLADE RUNNER's opening credits with Vangelis' ominous bass tones gradually mixing with synthesizer strains invited us into a whole new cinema world. Combined with Douglas Trumbull's extraordinary special effects, Jorden Cronenweth's gorgeous cinematography, Lawrene Paull's Production Design and Ridley Scott's eye, it's one of the most stunning beginnings of any film yet made.
        RIP Evangelos Odysseus Papathanassiou.

Between Blade Runner and Chariots of Fire, he left a massive legacy. his work with Jon Anderson was also very interesting stuff.
