  • RIP Rachel Nagy (Detroit Cobras)

It was reported on the band's FB page yesterday that she passed away (and they had just announced some new tour dates).

The last time I saw them they weren't quite the same band they were in the early 2000's but those first few times I saw them back then, they were an amazing live band.

    Rock! Shock! Pop!

I never got right into them, but I first heard Mink, Rat or Rabbit courtesy of you, and there's some great stuff on there. RIP.

But if you're in the mood for fuzzy guitars and that voice, there ya go. R.I.P. Also, jealous that you've seen em live. There's only a handful of bands i regret not catching up with, this is one.

Incredibly sad to hear this news - The Detroit Cobras were one of my favourite bands of the early '00s. 'Life, Love and Leaving' from 2001 in particular is an absolute monster album. I actually dug it out just last week whilst making a nostalgic mixtape for a friend's 40th birthday. Passes the "yep, still holds up" test with flying colours.

Their stuff also played a big role in inspiring my younger self to develop an interest in vintage soul/r'n'b, for which I am eternally grateful.

They were always top of my list of "bands I really want to see live", but never managed to (I don't think they visited the UK very often, if at all), and now I never will. Always hate that particular feeling.

Obviously I don't know the story here, but if the band were planning new activity I guess Rachel's death must fall into the sudden/unexpected category, so - awful. Really sad to hear, and R.I.P. to a world class shouter.

Their music, along with Ultraglide In Black by The Dirtbombs, had the same effect on me and yeah, it was a real eye opening experience to a whole world of music I hadn't paid attention to that I know really appreciate and enjoy.

Yes, completely agreed! 'Ultraglide in Black' is another fantastic album which I still put on frequently. Just flawlessly cool. Following the pointers laid down by the songwriting credits on both that and the early Cobras records was a real education for my dumb, white rock-listening early 20s self.

So strange in retrospect to think that two awesome tribute albums to black music came out of the same city in the same year.... and (arguably) now sound more vital than most of the bands from that scene who were playing original material.

I haven't listened to the Dirtbombs in ages. I should remedy that.
