If you haven't seen the Bogdanovich documentary, it's something even a non-fan can get into

Now I'm reading online that he didn't die, he was just taken off life support and brain dead?

He's not dead yet as I write this, but there's as close to zero chance of recovery as possible.

Refrained from commenteing yesterday due to the conflicting reports, but fuck. Of all the music related deaths over the past few years, this one is on par with Lemmy as far as striking a personal cord. While I never knew nor met the man, Petty was alaways a constant. No matter how musical tastes changed or evolved over the years, his stuff always sounded good and as time went on certain songs took on more meaning. Not even the biggest hits ever suffered from classic rock radio overplay. The songwriting, melodies and lyrics were too damn good to ever wear out.

                That last verse. Shivers.

Nicely put, Tom. Yeah, I jumped the gun once I saw it posted by reputable sources, then removed my posts on FB and instagram. Anyway, very sad. RIP.

You know you and your band are good when Johnny Cash not only covers one of your songs but has you as his backing band, even has you join in on the vocals on a few tracks, just like Cash did with Petty and the Heartbreakers on Unchained. Petty's guest vocals on "The Kneeling Drunkard's Plea" are excellent, the perfect counterpoint to Cash's baritone.

Cash even covered "I Won't Back Down" with Petty on Solitary Man.

Possible controversial opinion, of the songs he did with Stevie Nicks, I prefer "I Will Run to You" to "Stop Draggin' My Heart Around", though the later is sexy as hell.

Was just talking to Ian today about the Cash stuff. Gave Wildflowers another listen today. Like I said, I wasn't a superfan, but he seemed to be a really cool guy, and he was an amazing songwriter.

Tom Petty's music built bridges that still continue to bring people together today. And isn't that what music is all about? Putting aside our differences and sharing a common bond, while we rock out to some bitchin' tunes. Rest in peace, Tom Petty, I'll see you in the next life.

Fact. It's interesting to see how many people from different walks have been affected by this. Punks and skins are grieving alongside hippies and metal heads. His music crossed a lot of genre/scene barriers in a way that few other artists can.

Always loved Tom Petty. Was bummed about this, but there are very few famous people I can really get sad about passing away. I'll continue to enjoy his music like I always have.

The crowd at The Swamp in Gainesville all sang “Won't Back Down” between the third and fourth quarters of the University of Florida Gators football game on Saturday. A nice hometown tribute.
