No typo there. I've read maybe 3 or 4 Spawn issues in my lifetime so I don't know dick about the series. But I have a chance to pick up a couple of the 50 issue Compendiums under $30 and was just wondering if it is worth the bother. Thanks!

I liked it as a kid when it first came out and still think a lot of the art is impressive even to this day, but I have trouble reading it as a man pushing 50. It just seems.... dumb to me. Plenty of fans out there though, so maybe it's just me.
I’m with Ian on this. I’m by no means an expert but have tried to get into Spawn this year, principally because I like the character design. I’ve read half a dozen recent issues of the main title, the Spawn’s Universe one-shot and the first trade of King Spawn. It’s not terrible but it is absurdly violent and actually feels like a caricature at times. It’s action-packed and looks great but . . . is kinda dumb.
Those compendia are good value but I would read some of the first issues on the Image site first and see what you make of it (well, them). Spawn, King Spawn, Gunslinger Spawn and Scorched should all be there.
Edited to add, it’s reasonable to observe that I have read recent issues and the compendia you’re referring to probably collect issues from the nineties, so maybe take my comments with a pinch of salt.
Thanks for the input. I picked up Gunslinger Spawn 10-12 for free and it really went in one eye and out the other. Then these compendiums popped up cheap and I was curious. Think I will pass on these.

The first 25 or so issues are worth a read if found cheap. For years it was easy with some work to dig them out of dollar bins. Now I see the same issues 5 to 8 bucks each.
