Got my copy of Vol. 2 today, pretty rad stuff. Either Canada Post or USPS fucked with the package a fair bit (it was just in a paper envelope) but I'll put some heavy books on it to flatten it out. I did read the history of comics censorship in Canada article last night before bed, pretty interesting stuff. I was actually in my LCS when the cops came in back in the 80s and grabbed some books off the rack (I specifically remember Omaha The Cat Dancer being one of them).

I had a friend who was trying to collect Deadworld when it was running, and he grabbed a few issues in Montana that were blocked by customs from getting to the Canadian distributor, and the border agents actually seized the single copies he had in his backpack.

That's crazy. I've got a run of Deadworld, most of which was acquired before I moved south. Omaha I can sorta understand, since it's pornographic, but Deadworld is just gory and dumb.

I remember importing Shogun Assassin on VCD before it was available on DVD when I still lived in Canada. It arrived with a notice that customs had inspected it but they let it through. I think that was my one and only experience like that.

Laserdiscs and VCDs were insane loopholes in customs bans. They never gave inspection centres the equipment to check either one, so you could order anything and have it get through on laser, but the VHS would be seized and destroyed. The infamous mislabelling of the Image LD of Day of the Dead as being the Canadian theatrical cut, but in reality containing the fully uncut print, was actually intentional, as Image didn't have the resources to press a separate disc for Canada, and knew they'd get the disc through if they just said it was the cut version.
