Hey now cowpokes, gather 'round, it's time for Western Tuesdays!
LOUIS L'AMOUR - LAW OF THE DESERT BORN
Adapted by Beau L'amour, Kathy Nolan, and Charles Santino. Art by Thomas Yeates
"During a rough draught the son of a farmer's former partner moves a river to keep others from gaining access. Discussions with the young man lead to murder and a posse is formed to capture him. The posse is lead by a half-Mexican half-Apache criminal that they let out of jail, him being the only one who can track the murderer."
Gorgeous ink wash art by Thomas Yeates gives this traditional western tale the classic look of the era it was originally created in, this being Louis L'Amour's first post-war published novel. The back of the book has a fantastic essay on the journey this book took by Beau L'Amour, Louis L'Amour's son. It began when Beau was tasked by his father to help produce his work as a radio drama which led to a screenplay and eventually this graphic novel published as a classy hardcover by Random House.
A great classic western tale of revenge and betrayal in the mold of classic westerns from the fifties and, well, by books by Louis L'Amour.

I found London Night Studios Razor:Burn TPB cheap. It collects that entire mini series and for some dumb reason I'm trying to piece together a full reading copy run of Razor.
Went today to open it and look at it. See the tape on the back says Tamper PRoof. Look closer has a Lone Star Comics COA behind the board and Everette Hartsoe signed this TPB back in the mid to late 90s. Will grab pics once I'm back inside. But was a neat surprise.

That's cool! I do have a bit of remorse for letting all my Razor comics go. I had the Vigil cover signed by Tim and by the inker Tim Tyler.
I meant to mention this in the other thread. When I was about 14 I had all the BLOOD REIGN issues except 2 so I called the number in the comic. Some lady answered and I said something about ordering Blood Reign comics, and she said hold on, it sound like it was in some old mom's kitchen. Tim Tyler picked up the phone and I started gushing. He said he was doing a small show at a local Knight of Columbus hall (lol). During our conversation he said he was missing a copy of RAW MEDIA MAGS #2, the Rebel Studios version. It was recently out but already scarce. I traded him my copy for a full color marker sketch of Blood Reign. I hate to say I'm not sure if I have that any more but I bloody hope I do. A few years later after college I saw Tim at the Chicago con and he was nice enough to let me sit at his table for a while and look at my portfolio and talk. Stand up guy. Him, Vigil, Quinn and Darryl (Broken Halos, can't remember his last name, because:

Well here's all I found of original sketches.
John K. Cancelled-ass John K. Google it, I don't care. Him and Cos. We all got dicks. Anywho, this was in the mid to late 90s, probably around 95-ish because I didn't have a car yet so I was still hanging out with my mom. I didn't have my cool used McDonalds-red Geo Storm yet. This was a last minute thing but I can't remember the main thing. I think it was an animation festival at the Music Box in the north side of Chicago. I think me and my mom, who drove me, went there then went to this art gallery still on the north side. It was all animation cels and art and all of Spümcø (natch) was there; John Kricfalusi, Bob Camp, Jim Smith (not the Bone guy, but I met him a couple times over the years too! Swell guy, double natch).
It was a small boutique gallery that in the '90s was a dime a dozen. Lots of great classic animation cels from Disney and Hanna Barbara. I bought a paint by number Jimmy the Idiot in Space box set and everyone signed it. They even drew neat cartoons on it. THAT'S LONG GONE! The box came with a tiny cereal box that included a pencil topper. I do believe I have that somewhere but I maybe stroked out on that too.
Suddenly a line formed, John K was doing sketches! There was only about a dozen people in the joint, it was late has hell, maybe around midnight. Everything cool happens at midnight lemme tell my story. I was maybe sixth in line. I grabbed a random xerox flyer and without making eye contact on either of our parts he asked my name then asked which character I wanted. I said "Mr. Horse, please."

I also recently rereada a Razor back issue, the reprint of #1 with the photo cover, and found once I opened it that Hartsoe had signed it. I don't recall ever meeting him at a con or anything so it must have been signed when I bought it.
It's cool to see a lot of the 'outlaw' comics from that era starting to get appreciated a bit more. Full credit to Ed Piskor for hyping this stuff on the Cartoonist Kayfabe channel.Rock! Shock! Pop!

A few books I've read in the last 48 hours or so.
Milestone Returns One Shot this is, I guess you'd saw, a primer for the upcoming Milestone reboots. It was ok. Nice to see Denys Cowan and Bill Sienkiecwicz working together again, that's the main reason I grabbed it.
Something Is Killing The Children #16 - man there are a lot of variant covers out for this. Because I am poor, I went for the Jenny Frison standard cover B, it's a rad image. Anyway, it starts Erica Slaughter's origin story after the first arc finished up. It's interesting so far. I really like this book.
Apocalypse 5000 One Shot - Ian's pick of the week! From Floating World Comics, this reprints some of the back up stories from Ken Landgraf's New York City Outlaws, which was basically self published back in the very early 80s and which are now hard to find and expensive to get. FWC, in conjunction with Power Comics, have teased that NYC Outlaws is either coming back in some form or being reprinted in 2022, but details are scarce. Anyway, if you like Landgraf's proto-outlaw style, you'll like this book. It's printed on nice, thick B&W paper stock and it's basically just full of non-stop post-nuke asskicking. It's really fun. Everyone should buy a copy so FWC keeps giving us more stuff like this.
Shadow Doctor - I think I mentioned this a few pages ago. #4 is the penultimate issue and it's wrapping up the story nicely. I think can see where it's headed, but if it is going where I think it is, that's okay, we can all use some happy endings now and then (not a handjob joke, honest). Very well-written, character driven piece with great art and a neat bit of true life history brought to the funny book page.
Alien #3 - Marvel's series continues to lag behind a lot of what Dark Horse was doing but this is getting better even if I still don't like Larroca's artwork very much. I'm not sure I love where this is going but I'll give the next couple of issues a shot just to see.
I Breathed A Body #5 - this was the final story of this completely fucked up horror story that is both a look at how we're all fucked by social media and internet culture and also a look at how scary spores are. It's unlike anything else I've read, I think a lot of it went over my head, and I really, really liked it. When this gets collected anyone into mind fuck comics that aren't afraid to go really dark, deal in disturbing imagery and still mange to offer some really intelligent social commentary should seek it out.
Black Friday #2 - this is a fun horror comic that owes too much to Evil Dead but which is entertaining regardless. The art is neat, very atypical for a horror book, reminds me of Sam Keith at times but without really aping his style at all.
Department Of Truth #9 - I've mentioned this book a few times and it keeps getting weirder, wilder and better with each issue. This one made me laugh and also freaked me out at the same time. There's a lot going on here and I can't wait for #10.Rock! Shock! Pop!

WHen I laid in bed for 2 hours last night and couldn't fall asleep I grabbed a stack of comics.
Whisper Vol 2 Issue 1 from First Comics.
I have read maybe 7 or so issues of this run of Whisper over the years. Recently put together a run of the first 20 issues, then the last 10. Not a bad way to start a new series. A few things didn't make sense, but I bet that is cause I never read the short lived Vol 1 of Whisper.
