A friend gifted me a copy last week and it's a pretty amazing achievement.
"Set against the tumultuous political backdrop of late '60s Chicago, My Favorite Thing Is Monsters is the fictional graphic diary of 10-year-old Karen Reyes, filled with B-movie horror and pulp monster magazines iconography. Karen Reyes tries to solve the murder of her enigmatic upstairs neighbor, Anka Silverberg, a holocaust survivor, while the interconnected stories of those around her unfold. When Karen's investigation takes us back to Anka's life in Nazi Germany, the reader discovers how the personal, the political, the past, and the present converge."
Fantagraphics put it out.

Vol. 2 comes out in Sept. 2021.

The artwork is gorgeous, super detailed, cartoonish in exactly the way it should be, the use of color is sparing but really adds drama and emphasis to the illustrations. I'm only half way through this thing, it's a pretty massive tome, so I can't comment on the last half of the story but the first half is really, really well done, you really that it is a ten year old telling it from her own perspective. It goes into some pretty dark territory, won't spoil anything just yet, but it's such a unique and refreshing different piece that I've kind of fallen in love with it.
