  • Rocketeer Adventures?

So normally I'd not be too keen on this what with Dave Stevens having passed away and all and with the character being so completely his, but check this out:

Writers: John Cassaday, Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek | Art ists: John Cassaday, Mike Allred, Michael Kaluta, Mike Mignola and Jim Silke | Covers: Alex Ross, Dave Stevens (1:5 Sketch Variant)

The Rocketeer Flies Again! Dave Stevens unveiled the Rocketeer nearly 30 years ago to instant acclaim, and in all the years since that auspicious debut, respect for Dave's talent and his greatest creation have only continued to grow. Last year, IDW had the honor of releasing the complete Rocketeer saga in several editions, showcasing the work of this great artist as it was always meant to be seen: completely remastered, with nearly every page scanned directly from the originals and recolored by Dave's hand-picked colorist.

Today, we are able to celebrate Dave's talent once again, with an all-new Rocketeer anthology miniseries written and drawn by some of the finest creators in comics, and with the full cooperation of the Stevens family. The first star-studded issue of The Rocketeer features a gorgeous cover by Alex Ross, and terrific stories by John Cassaday, Mike Allred, Kurt Busiek, and Michael Kaluta, plus outstanding pin-ups by Mike Mignola and Jim Silke - all paying tribute to the continued legacy of Rocketeer and Dave Stevens!

Jim Silke's involvement is a big deal, his stuff is great and his output infrequent. Allred and Kaluta are also tops, rad artists in my book.

I dunno how well Mignola's style will translate to the character but I'd be willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Flipped through it yesterday. Looked pretty. Didn't buy it though. Might get the trade if reviews are good.

I haven't been to the comic store in ages but do want to get this - that said, yeah, I think I'll wait for the trade. My days of caring about variants and 1st editions have long since passed. I just want the whole story.

There isn't really a "whole story" persay. It's an anthology series, with 3 short stories per issue all written and drawn by different artists. You don't need any of the previous issues to pick one up and enjoy it. I say check it out. I've bought them all so far.

So IDW has been publishing Rocketeer stuff for a while now.

DC was publishing The Spirit but has stopped.

Now IDW has it, and is teaming up The Spirit with The Rocketeer.

Mark Waid is writing it. Paul Smith is drawing it. Color me intrigued.

                  More on this here.

"“Not many writers have been lucky enough to write The Rocketeer or The Spirit,” said Mark Waid, “so I feel like I've won the lottery. This is one of the most exciting—and scariest—assignments I've ever undertaken. Luckily, I've got Paul Smith to make me look good!” Editor Scott Dunbier is the pleased with the murder mystery filled with political intrigue that brings together the signature characters created by Dave Stevens and Will Eisner. “This is one of those ideas that just makes me smile,” remarked Dunbier. “I'm a long-time fan of both characters and it's an honour to work on it. And if Mark won the lottery, I hit the Powerball, baby!”

I hope it's better than FIRST WAVE that teamed up the Spirit with Doc Savage and Batman. Bunch of crap that was.
