  • Lady Stay Dead

OK, so we sat down with the new Code Red Blu-ray release of this one last night, I'd never seen it before.

It's a pretty sleazy movie, I've seen it referred to as a slasher in various places but it's not really a slasher so much as it is an exploitative thriller. Lots of nudity and fairly violent, a pretty 'rough' movie in a lot of ways with some twisted murder scenes in it. Nice location photography, the Australian coast looks very beautiful here, and if not all of the performances are amazing leading man Chard Hayward does a pretty good job as the main psycho. Neat to see Roger Ward pop up here too.

Anyone else get the new Blu-ray yet? Thoughts on the movie?

Yeah, this was a pleasant surprise. It was quite a bit rougher than I was expecting, the sexual assault was pretty disturbing and there's a general air of grimy sleaze over the whole thing. One hell of a unique way to kill someone in one scene too - and I liked the little touch of having her jewelry left as a clue that something is very wrong. The dog bit was pretty upsetting to me, always bothered more by animal deaths (even when they're just simulated). I also liked the way the killer used the cop car late in the film. I wouldn't consider this a slasher either, more of a psychological thriller, albeit with heavy emphasis on exploitation.
I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons.

I was kind of unnerved by the dog bit too but then when he pulled the body out of the water it looked so much like a stuffed animal that I had to laugh a bit.

I agree with everything Ian and Andrew mentioned. LADY STAY DEAD was the title I was looking forward to the most in the last Code Red bundle and it exceeded my expectations. It looks very nice in HD. I can see why some have referred to it as a slasher film but it does feel a bit more like an Exploitation film to me.

Anyone that enjoyed films like DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE might want to give LADY STAY DEAD a spin.

One of the things I found interesting was how my feelings about the killer changed as the film went on. Early in the film he's a goofball that I felt sorry for, but as the film went on he became increasingly more menacing until I was happy to see him get what he deserved.

Agreed. Noticed this too, it's something that the movie does quite well. He makes the transition from sad-sack/loser to misogynist woman hating psychopath quite well. It's hardly subtle, but it works.

I watched the first part of Lady Stay Dead, up the first murder in the house & thought it would be better viewing at night instead of a sunny Sunday afternoon. I think it may even be worth owning from what little I've seen.. the nudity is definitely a little more explicit than expected.

Sounds more promising than another slasher, will check it out.
