  • A thread for Mexican exploitation master Rene Cardona Jr!

I thought this hep cat needed his own thread... just because I didn't realise he'd made 98 films until I looked at his IMDb profile. I've only seen about a dozen of them.

There's a new Italian release of GUYANA: CRIME OF THE CENTURY due in March; that could be worth keeping an eye on.

Speaking of Italian discs, has anyone here seen the Italian DVD release of NIGHT OF 1000 CATS, released in 2010? If so, is it really English-friendly, and is it uncut?

Out of those listed on the IMDB, I've seen and enjoyed:

    The Treasure Of The Amazon
    Tintorerra
    Guyana
    Cyclone
    Carlos The Terrorist
    The Bermuda Triangle
    Guns And Guts

And I've seen a few of his father's movies too.

For anyone interested (anyone? ), the Italian Stormovie release of NIGHT OF A THOUSAND CATS (as NOTTE DEI MILLE GATTI) which came out in 2010 is English-friendly, believed to be uncut but panned and scanned - whereas the later Italian DVD release (in 2012) is not-English-friendly, uncut and letterboxed. Frustration alert!

That would indicate that there's probably a good chance that a fan made composite will show up somewhere sooner rather than later....

I'll be keeping a VERY close eye on that GUYANA Italian disc. I consider the film a bit of a masterpiece of gut-punching filmmaking especially in its final reel and Stuart Whitman is amazing in the role.

Somebody forgot to tell him he was in a Mexican exploitation film because he delivers a serious and bone-chilling tour de force as Jones.

It's a really strong performance, I agree, Horace. I like Whitman generally, though.

The US DVD is said to be cut, and if I remember correctly it's quite a shoddy presentation. Apparently, No Shame released this in Italy already, in a slightly longer, letterboxed version that is also English-friendly. (Is the US disc letterboxed? I can't remember.) I'm not sure if that disc is totally uncut though. Does anyone know for sure?

The USA DVD is indeed a mess. It's a murky and crappy transfer by VCI.

              There's a reason this is a 4 dollar DVD.

Does anyone have a list of the specific cuts to the VCI release of GUYANA? I'm trying to put together a complete (or as near as dammit) composite of this film. I'm on the way with it, but want to make sure I haven't missed anything.

Answering myself, but hey... As far as I can ascertain, the VCI disc is only cut in two places: it's missing the infamous electrocution scene during the torture of the boys who are caught stealing, and is missing some nudity in the scene in which Jones orders 'Lazarus' to rape the couple he catches frolicking in the field. I also have my suspicion that a couple of scenes are optically darkened (eg, the scene of the Ames murders) but the print on the VCI disc is in bad shape anyway, so this may not be the case.

Currently, I've got a composite that runs for 107:41 mins. I've inserted the two aforementioned scenes into the VCI disc from a digital rip of a Japanese tape.

It's too bad that Cardona Jr. has been so poorly represented on DVD. I think the only releases that could be considered official are CYCLONE and NIGHT OF THE BLOODY APES. The TINTORERA disc boasts an uncut version, but the subs are fucked up; the dialogue switches between Spanish and English throughout, and the subs translate everything. The VCI discs of THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE and GUYANA have crappy transfers. I can't find any solid information on whether or not their TREASURE OF THE AMAZON DVD is the uncut version; it lists a running time of 105 minutes on the sleeve, but the DVD I have (from Japan Shock/Italian Shock) runs 116 minutes.

I'm wondering if anyone knows if his film HOSTAGES! aka UNDER SIEGE aka TRAFICANTES DE PANICO is available anywhere to purchase (even on DVD-r). It's a tough film to search for because of all the different titles.

                    Here's the awesome trailer for it;

Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

This was shot in scope, right?

Definitely scope. Off the top of my head, I'm not sure if it was shot anamorphically or via a 2-perf process, however.

CYCLONE is the best DVD release of one of Cardona Jr's films. I recall VCI's DVD release of GUNS AND GUTS being passable. Code Red's release of NIGHT OF 1000 CATS is the shorter US version of the picture.

HOSTAGES was released on DVD in the UK by a shady company called 23rd Century films; it's a rip from a VHS release. I think they also released CARLOS THE TERRORIST.

There was a Spanish language DVD of Traficantes de Panico, and I think I might have a VHS of Hostages somewhere, but I'd have to double check.

There's a thread about the shady UK DVD release of HOSTAGES at Lovelockandload: http://lovelockandload.net/index.php?topic=641.0

And it's available to purchase here: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hostages-Un...words=hostages However, be aware that this disc was on sale in pound stores (the UK equivalent of dollar stores, I guess), so the price of a used copy on Amazon Marketplace (£7, plus postage) is ridiculous - especially considering the disc is a bootleg release duped from a VHS tape.
