  • Kino Releasing The Monster That Challenged The World

Coming in August... a ways off but cool news nevertheless.
    Rock! Shock! Pop!

This unassuming B picture will never be considered one of the kings of 50s sci-fi but, it has garnered genuine affection among monster kids over the generations developing into a decent sized cult film.
Certainly, the Salton Sea locale in California gives it a unique flavor. An earthquake accidentally unleashes the mutant mollusks of the title. Tim Holt as a military man and Audrey Dalton as a research scientist secretary make for appealing leads.
Pat Fielder's script (based on a David Duncan story) follows genre conventions for the most part, but Fielder gives the characters a bit more human interest than the standard, especially the female roles. Arthur Laven's direction isn't showy, but builds suspense as the story reaches its climax. The full scale creature effects do the job well even when shown in full close-up.
MONSTER THAT CHALLENGED THE WORLD doesn't live up to its grand title, but, it's a good Saturday matinee creature feature.
