Anyone else get the Code Red DVD yet? Thoughts on this highly anticipated and oft discussed little horror oddity?
We watched it last night. I thought I had seen it before but I get confused, I'm 99.9% sure this was the first time I'd seen it.
Anyway, it's a pretty rad movie. I was pretty amazed how often Bo Svenson's character uttered the word 'fag' - political correctness is not a strong point in this picture! The homophobia of his character did work in the context of the plot though. Bo played the redneck cop pretty well. The real scene stealer though was Susan Tyrrell. What an unhinged, nutty and deliriously over the top performance. She definitely makes the movie a lot more fun than it would be otherwise.
Plenty of weird atmosphere in the movie and that opening log through the car window scene was a surprise. It slows down a bit from there but builds nicely to a pretty wacky conclusion. I could see myself wanting to go back and watch this one again soon.
The Code Red DVD looks good. I, and everyone else, wanted a Blu-ray of course and as you watch it you can't help but think how much it would benefit from an HD presentation. There are those out there who will no doubt say 'stop whining, it looks as good as a Blu-ray' but that's no true - this is a clean, colorful and really good looking DVD but it doesn't hit Blu-ray levels of visible detail even when upscaled. Still, a very nice SD presentation for sure and it looked a lot better than I expected given its obscurity. Haven't watched any of the extras yet, but I'll get to them when I have the time as there's got to be some interesting stories about this one...
