  • The Dead Next Door On Blu-ray

    From the 88 Films Blog:

"Part of the fun of working in the UK home video industry over the past five years (and that now seems and feels like a lifetime) has been assisting with the occasional acquisition. Whilst I never shout about this I do hope no one reading will take exception to my celebrating playing a part in bringing this enjoyably anarchic zombie gut-muncher (a fond memory from my own teens - courtesy of the old British VHS tape from Screen Edge) back to UK shelves - in glorious HD - and newly remastered by Bookwalter himself. If you have never seen The Dead Next Door then prepare to enjoy the movie like never before. Trust us, you're gonna eat this up!"

I remember having quite a lot of hype in magazines when it was first released but it was ultimately disappointing. It's watchable but I don't think I'll ever revisit it again.

Agreed, it was far more intriguing to read about than actually watch. It's obviously done with a lot of love for Romero and all things zombie but that's not enough for me. The acting is atrocious - and I'm a far cry from a harsh critic ordinarily in that regard. I've still got the tape, never felt the need to get it on disc.

In regards to the delayed Tempe release....

              Hello again!

I realize things have been quiet for nearly 3 weeks, but today I have good news to share: The Ultimate Edition is out of manufacturing and winging its way across the country to Tempe World Headquarters!

Our replicator originally gave us an estimated completion date of this Friday, December 18, which would have put them in our hands right around Christmas. (Bah, humbug!) However, they just advised us the project is not only finished, but has already left their warehouse more than a week early! According to the freight carrier, the discs are currently somewhere in Chicago, and should be in our hands later this week.

That means we'll be able to start shipping preorders as early as this weekend, putting it in the hands of at least some of you in time for Christmas. (Who says there's no such thing as a Christmas miracle?) I've been fielding a lot of anxious inquiries lately, and your patience will soon be rewarded!

I'll have another update once preorders are on the way to the post office, but in the meantime, here's a photo of some lonely Ultimate Collector's Edition packages sitting in my office, waiting to be boxed up and shipped off!

              Stay sick!

According to their twitter feed, the Tempe release, which is pretty bad ass, is down to the last 75 units. Diabolik has them for now. Anyone interested in this should move quickly.

Yeah, I remember how crystal-clear all the images were in those mags (like Fangoria) and when I finally saw the movie it was so disappointing how soft the image actually is. I'm not sure if the articles even mentioned it was shot Super-8, but those images made it look like crisp 35mm.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

Anyone looking for the 3 disc ultimate edition that Tempe put out? Diabolik just got in what are supposed to be the very last copies that will be made available.

                        Details on the reissue:

Tempe Entertainment announces the launch of its Blu-ray label Tempe Digital with the September 26 release of the 1990 landmark independent shocker “The Dead Next Door.” Priced at $29.95 SRP, this 2-Disc Collector's Edition includes the same Blu-ray from the company's limited (and now out of print) 3-Disc Ultimate Edition, along with an all-new DVD featuring a collectible slipcover and three new bonus features.

Two and a half decades before “The Walking Dead” made zombies mainstream on cable television, 19-year-old writer/director J.R. Bookwalter (“Ozone,” “Witchouse 2: Blood Coven”) embarked on “The Dead Next Door,” an ambitious horror feature pitting an elite team of Zombie Squad soldiers against hoards of the undead and the secretive religious cult hell-bent on protecting them. The film would ultimately take four years to complete with the help of a now-famous Hollywood director and more than 1,500 Northeast Ohio residents, who portrayed the multitudes of bloodthirsty ghouls.

For this 2-Disc Collector's Edition release, brand-new 4:3 and 16:9 1080p HD masters have been painstakingly created from a 2K restoration using the original Super-8mm film elements. Also included is a 5.1 surround mix which restores the voices of the original cast members for the first time ever, vintage and newly-prepared bonus materials, and much more. The DVD includes a 4:3 standard-definition presentation of the restored feature plus a candid audio commentary by the director recorded in 2001, which was previously only available on long out-of-print international releases.

The second disc also features an all-new 2017 interview with actor Scott Spiegel (director of cult favorites “Intruder” and “From Dusk Till Dawn 2: Texas Blood Money”), as well as a 1999 tour of several locations where the film was shot. Rounding out the Collector's Edition is a beautiful slipcover featuring newly-commissioned artwork, which will only be available with the first pressing of 1,000 units.

“The Dead Next Door” 2-Disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray + DVD will be available everywhere on September 26, 2017 at $29.95 SRP, with retail distribution from our partners at MVD.

                        About Tempe Digital:

Founded in 1991 during the heyday of the VHS format, Tempe Video has a lengthy history of distributing independent, low-budget features and special interest titles. The company cemented a reputation as “the Criterion of direct-to-video features” in 2003 after branching into DVD with a line of nationally distributed, feature-packed Special Editions.

Tempe's eclectic catalog of horror and cult fare includes the all-star dramedy “Eddie Presley” (directed by Jeff Burr), Showtime documentary “Something to Scream About” (directed by Jason Paul Collum), and “The Dead Next Door,” a sprawling zombie epic directed by J.R. Bookwalter, which launches the new Tempe Digital line of Blu-ray releases.

Love how the press release uses the wrong word. It should be hordes of zombies, unless multiple large stockpiles of zombies were suddenly unleashed.
