  • 60's/70's satanic/occult horror

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone can recommend some 60's/70's satanic/occult horror. Films like BLACK MAGIC RITES, ALUCARDA, VIRGIN WITCH, etc.

I'm a big fan of this style, so any recommendations would be cool. Thanks!

    BTW, the sleazier the better!

Hammer's TO THE DEVIL A DAUGHTER (1975) comes to mind.

There's WITCH'S HAMMER (Czech, 1970) and A WOMAN POSSESSED (France, 1976). They couldn't be more different in approach; the latter is soft-core.

Paul Wendkos' THE MEPHISTO WALTZ (1971) is undermined by the presence of Alan Alda (before MASH) but nonetheless worth repeated viewings. The previews contained miles of footage that were cut from the theatrical release and never reinstated.

SIMON KING OF THE WITCHES (1971) and THE BROTHERHOOD OF SATAN (1971) are safe American films.

Devil's Rain is a good pick. It's a wildly uneven film but the moments that work really work well especially Earnest Borgnine as Satan. Plus Anton LaVey served as a consultant.

        DEVIL'S RAIN -- why didn't I think of it.

Jack Starrett's RACE WITH THE DEVIL (1975) is a lot of fun.

NIGHT OF DARK SHADOWS (1971) is missing only forty minutes but it's still a potent witchcraft tale.

Just curious, is SATANS WIFE and LUCIFERA: DEMON LOVER from Mya worth picking up? I know they have pretty awful transfers, but Ive ben wanting to see these for a while. Are these even watchable quality?

Don't forget ASYLUM OF SATAN and SATAN'S CHILDREN... a couple of memorable, and in Satan's Children's case odd and sleazy, drive-in classics... I second Ian's comment in the link mentioned earlier :)

They're watchable (imo) but don't expect anything near good quality.

Agreed. Grainy VHS transfers, but watchable given the rarity of each film. Still need to grab Lucifera, but liked Satans Wife well enough, even if I've always felt Lara Wendel was one of the worst actors in the Italian exploitation flick circuit. (Killing Birds, anyone?!?)
