This was the other part of my 'sick day' triple feature yesterday. I hadn't seen this since I was in high school - so yeah... almost twenty years. Fuck that makes me feel old. At any rate, I remember kinda hating it then but as my appreciation for SOV horror has only increased over the years and as Troma handed me a copy when we went there last week to review, I figured I had to give it another shot. And I'm glad I did. It's a little long for what it is and goodness gracious me oh my is the humor ever corny but the effects are pretty great and the gore in the last half hour or so is ridiculous and relentless.

And then there's the scene in the end, that takes place in the house. The movie takes on a really different tone here, it gets very dark and is actually even a little bit disturbing. Kinda has a Texas Chainsaw Massacre vibe to it - not as effective, mind you, but in the same vein.

Glad I sat down with this one again after such a long time. I guess I forgot enough about my initial distaste for it that I was able to appreciate it this time.

Like most of Troma's catalogue, the whole thing is available to watch for free on youtube.

Also the poster art is great!

I've been on a SOV kick myself for the last few weeks and this was probably my first SOV flick. I saw it when I was about 12 and I think it was also the first DVD I ever bought as opposed to renting. So yeah, two firsts. God I wish Troma didn't charge up the ass for shipping or I could have gotten into that 25 Cent DVD sale back then.

As for the flick, it's fun. Some corny moments but that's the nature of the medium and especially a Troma flick. Has some genuinely funny moments too and I like that guy who doesn't say anything and just drinks. One of the great heroes in a zombie movie there.

I'm watching it again via Youtube and it's fun to see these guys recreate the gore effects from Day of the Dead.
