  • The Dark Half

I kind of have a soft spot for this, though I know it's not the best Romero movie or King adaptation ever. Probably because I saw it in the theater as a teenager. At any rate, no word of a US Blu-ray but evidently it's getting the HD treatment in France.

The Amazon.fr listing notes English audio and that it'll be 1.85.1 widescreen.

I've always liked this movie too. Timothy Hutton makes a great bad guy. Too bad no one pays it enough attention to warrent BD over stateside.

I could see this going to a boutique label like Twilight Time, though it's with MGM... so maybe Shout! Factory might tackle it? Romero & King have built in followings.

Seems like a no brainer. Maybe Romero fucked up the rights.

          The Dark Half

Lesser titles have popped up on Blu. I've also noticed that its pretty common for a French Blu to show up as a USA title within 3-4 months of the European release - like Stallone's COBRA.

The only exceptions that come quickly to mind are CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST (which was heavily DNR'd) and Abel Ferrara's CHINA GIRL (which looks fantastic).

I bought this disc last year. Not a bad presentation, as I recall. I'll see if I can dig the disc out and report back with more details over the weekend.

I've always really liked this one. Tim Hutton can play anything and kills in the duel role but especially as the high toned son of a bitch George Stark.

I saw this film in the theatre when I was young and loved it. Hutton's performance is superb. While I can see why the Academy would snub a film like this (the direction is a little confused), Hutton's performance is one of the best of the year. He should have been nominated for an Oscar!

I think this is one of Romero's lesser films - it's much too long and a bit dull - but the commentary on Scream Factory's Blu is absolutely fantastic. It's just Romero with Stuart F. Andrews as moderator and it's one of the most intimate and informative of all the Romero commentaries. He goes into great detail about the dry spell between DARK HALF and BRUISER and it's glorious. He's very talkative throughout and Andrews wisely stays fairly quiet and only has to occasionally move it along, but always with smart questions. I love the group commentaries on the various other films, but they always feel a little crowded and sometimes I just want to hear what Romero has to say: this is the commentary I've always wanted. Even if you're not really a fan of the film, it's essential.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

I've never seen it, probably because I was good enough with John Lithgow in Raising Cain just a year earlier.
