I thought it was underwhelming. Had some cool moments but it just a bit boring for me.

Saw it earlier today and had a good time. I was surprised by how unserious it ultimately was though. I wasn't expecting gratuitous jump scares and camp excess. It made for a strange -- but not too uneven -- mix with all the more somber and studied aspects.

The Herzog film remains my favorite version followed by Murnau, with this being third of the Orlock versions. If Coppala's operatic, Vlad Tepes influenced riff on this material is also included in the conversation, Eggers' film would drop to 4th on my list.

I liked it. Nothing is topping Murnau but this one had a claustrophobic sense of death, decay and madness that I dug.

I checked this out at the theater and it was good, but it didn't need to be 2+ hours, and the familiarity of the story does make some of it tedious. This story is too slight for such a bloated run time. With that said, the sequence with Thomas travelling to Orlock's castle and the time spent at the castle is extraordinary. The castle itself is just incredible; it felt like a place where a ghoul would reside. I watched Herzog's version a few days after I saw the new one, and the set-design of Orlock's castle is almost comical in its details: I actually laughed when it showed the very kitschy skeleton clock and all of the food on the table the morning after (looks like Orlock has a personal maid!). I still prefer Roland Topor's interpretation of Renfield. Also, I felt Orlock, in the new one, looked like a jacked-up version of George Eastman's beast in ANTHROPOPHAGOUS.

They brought back 5 dollar Tuesdays, so we went tonight. It was....okay. Some parts done well, but it spends a lot of time spinning wheels, IMO.
