  • BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR & SOCIETY (A DVD/Blu-Ray Update)

I PM'd Brian Yuzna, again, recently, asking him about 2 movies: Why there has never been an upgraded DVD of BRIDE OF RE-ANIMATOR and whether SOCIETY will ever get a re-release. Here's what he just replied to me: "Hi Shawn, The US rights to Bride are tied up until 2014 - at that time I will put out a bluray with extras. Society I believe is available as of January - so it may be time to bluray it."

So I'm guessing AB no longer has Society then. I could see Lionsgate doing both of these.

There was always speculation that Lionsgate had BRIDE, but I wasn't sure what he meant about SOCIETY, that a DVD is coming in January, or that he's got the rights available as of January. I asked him to clarify. Shit, gotta wait until 2014 for a NEW BRIDE DVD.

Sounds like he means he gets the rights back in Jan.

That's what I thought. Been looking off and on for SOCIETY for the past six months. Think I'll stop looking now, and wait for the blu-ray. Hope it hits sometime next year, perhaps, by the Halloween, or something.

The old AB disc looked good for it's time, but those effects would probably by way cool in high def.

I haven't seen the movie since my teens, and am dying to see it again. For some ungodly reason, I neglected to buy the AB DVD. Can't recall why. What the hell was wrong with me?! I also skipped out on buying FREAKED and THE BEASTMASTER, Goddamit! Though, I DO recall why I didn't get them. Money issues, and they weren't priority flicks at the time.

I got the double feature with Society and Spontaneous Combustion on eBay some time ago. Just re-watched Society for the first time in, what, fifteen years or more. I found it quite entertaining, and yes the effects would probably look great in HD. A shame that we will have to wait another 2-3 years for en upgraded Bride, though.

For the hell of it, I sent Cliff Mac, the acquisition specialist of Shout! Factory, a PM. asking him if he could get a hold of SOCIETY and possibly put that blu-ray out. They'd do a hell of a job with it, I think.

I just hope when they do put out Bride on Blu that it's the Unrated cut and not the 'R' rated one.

                    Still need to see Society...

Brian Yuzna got back to me and he's thinking of going with Synapse for his release of SOCIETY. I assume then we'll probably get a DVD/Blu-Ray Combo.

                        From Second Sight's FB page:

"Unfortunately, and for reasons we are unable to go into, Second Sight will no longer be releasing Society and Bride of Re-Animator. However the good news for fans is that the films will be released by our friends at another specialist UK distributor so will be in good hands. Expect an announcement in the near future."

                            DATE. MATE. RE-ANIMATE.
The success of Stuart Gordon's hit horror-comedy Re-animator meant that a sequel was all but inevitable. The resulting follow-up, Bride of Re-animator - this time helmed by director Brian Yuzna (Society, Return of the Living Dead 3) - would prove that there was a good deal more life left in the story of Dr. Herbert West and his ghoulish exploits.
It is 8 years since the Miskatonic massacre. Unperturbed by the disastrous outcome of his previous meddling with the dead, Dr. West (again played by Jeffrey Combs) continues his research into the phenomenon of re-animation; only this time, he plans to create life - starting with the heart of his young protégé Dan's dearly deceased, Meg Halsey. Surely nothing could go wrong?
With special effects master Screaming Mad George (the man behind the infamous “shunting” sequence in Society) on hand to contribute a host of characteristically weird and wonderful creations - including zombified bats and a one-eyed finger spider - Bride of re-animator is a more than worthy successor to Gordon's original cult classic.
