GODZILLA, KING OF THE MONSTERS (2019)-Giant monsters beating the shit out of each other and destroying large cities. Count me in. Yeah, it is pretty dumb, but once in a while you need to turn your better judgment off and just roll with it.

Day 5: KONGO (1932) - Sweaty, sleazy pre-code fun. Absurdly racist of course, but if you can look past that there are plenty of things to enjoy, chief among them being Walter Huston's gleefully vicious lead performance. It's not one of the best pre-code films - there are some disconcerting plot jumps and the direction can be a bit sloppy - but it sure as hell is one of the nastiest.

Day 6: BAD DREAMS - Some fun gruesomeness and neat fire effects aren't enough to save this one. The main threat never feels particularly threatening and the climactic reveal doesn't make much sense. It's never a good sign when the scene that perks you up and makes you think things are going to get really interesting turns out to be a dream.

Day 7: VISITING HOURS - An interesting little film that keeps falling short of its potential. An older heroine, a focus on the killer's escalating attempts to gain access to her, an avoidance of obvious expendable victims, a couple of upsetting home invasion scenes; plenty of reasons this should be a superior stalk'n'slash thriller but it just doesn't gel. The main issues are pacing and storytelling, with Lee Grant's character being sidelined for long stretches of the film and the tension deflating far too often. There are also plot details that make no sense at all once you start to think about them, and the script has a tendency to dance around the consequences of the killer's actions. Plenty of interesting little thematic threads get brought up in the dialogue, but never expanded upon or tied into the action. Lots of missed opportunities.

The real saving grace is the actors: Lee Grant does solid work with an underwritten role, Michael Ironside is just as great as you'd expect, and Linda Purl is so engaging I had to look her up afterwards to see what else she's done. The answer is 'lots of TV work' but based on her performance here I'd say it's a shame she never got more big roles. Oh, and William Shatner is there for no good reason. I'm not saying I'd rather have less William Shatner, but his character serves absolutely no purpose in the script.

Worth a look, but lower your expectations on the way in.

        TITLE-Puppet Master The Littlest Reich
        SOURCE-Shudder streaming service

This came out in 2018 and is the 12 official film in the Puppet Master franchise. Yea Puppet Master vs Demonic Toys doesn't count as an official film. I had heard this was a damn good film but never saw the dvd for sale. Then months ago got Shudder, which is AMC's horror streaming service, and saw Shudder had the movie.

Thomas Lennon is a comic book artist that works in a comic shop. Him,his girlfriend and his boss from the comic shop goto a convention near the hotel from the first Puppet Master film. The convention is based around Andre Toulan.

Most of the people that come to the convention bring with them puppets. Lots of which were stolen from Toulan. And fairly quickly the puppets come to life and start killing people.

And wow this is the bloodiest film in the franchise. Get to see Torch burn a Jewish couple alive. And see the flesh slowly liquefying. Then get to see Blade cut a guy's achilles tendon and wow is it bloody.

A neat thing is Barbara Crampton is in the film. As an Ex-cop. Which comes in handy cause the last 30 minutes of the film has all the cast trapped in a hotel with only a few guns.

This entry in the series really feels like the original. But with a bigger budget. The puppet effects look really good. The gore is well done. And the cast is a nice mixture of people you know and unknowns.

The best part is so many new puppets get introduced. Like the Lil Hitler puppet that possesses a guy. Or this puppet that is half puppet half flying drone.

Anyways if you enjoy the Puppet Master films and want something closer to the good entires this is worth tracking down.

Puppet Master the Littlest Reich gets a B+.

            TITLE-Brain Damage
            SOURCE-Shudder Streaming Service

Ahh Brain Damage. A film I read about in Fango years ago. Back in 90 or so found the old VHS for rent and grabbed it. While I liked the film it didn't connect that well with me back then. It wasn't until I got the DVD release that I really loved this film. Part of that might be the VHS I rented was the cut version. With most of the blowjob scene missing.

Set in a grimy late 80s NYC Brain Damage is about 2 brothers sharing an apartment. Seems one of their neighbors has a purple turd looking creature. That eats brains and in exchange for the brains gives it's owners this blue fluid. That is highly addictive. The creature leaves the old couple and ends up with one of the brothers.

Once this brother has gotten a taste of the blue fluid he is hooked. And the rest of the film is him either trying to find brains for Alymer, the creature,to eat or trying to over come his addiction to the blue fluid.

Made by the cult director Frank Henenlotter this film is Frank's parable about drug addiction. And it is a nasty one. There is piles of great gore. Like in the previously mentioned blowjob scene. The lead is in a club. A woman approaches him. And they end up in an alley. The lady goes to blow the guy and when she unzips his pants Alymer jumps out and rips her brains out through her mouth.

I love all the little touches Henenlotter gives the movie. Like how Alymer is voiced by famous Northeast horror host Zacherle. Or how the lead guy from Basket Case makes an appearance ,along with his wicker basket! Plus it is always nice to see a film that was shot in NYC back when it was sleazy and grimy.

            Brain Damage gets a A-.

And today Cody covered Zombies of Mora Tau

Demon City Shinjuku. Why is it that anime has only extremely rarely attempted horror? You get your adventure shit, action shit, romance shit, porno shit, kids shit, sci fi shit, whatever. But when it comes to horror it's so few and far between. You got Urotsukidoji and Wicked City. There's Vampire Hunter and Vampire Hunter D. Blood: The Last Vampire. Devil Man and the recent Cry Baby series. Genocybe, Perfect Blue, and this movie. That's about it. It's weird how there's so few attempts at horror in the medium.

Fun gory 80's as fuck anime. Very enjoyable.

Shin Godzilla-There is a lot not to like in this movie, but I do anyway. I'm not sure which is worse. A big ass monster or politicians. Probably the latter. Worth owning.

Sinister Invasion-Okay, this is officially the bottom of the barrel in the 4 Karloff Mexican movies. Probably should have rated this one lower.

Secret Of The Blue Room-An old dark house scenario set in a castle that really works well. Great cast with Atwill, Stuart, Arnold, Stevens and more. Would love to see this get an upgrade to blu ray.

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. Would have been better as an R. PG-13 horror has no real audience. It's still too intense for very young children to watch. Anyone who likes horror doesn't want to see a PG-13 horror movie. And young kids aren't stupid, they want to feel like an adult and see an R rated movie. Just fucking making an R rated movie. At the end of the day it's simply okay but I think there's still room for an accurate adaptation to be done.

Watched the first two episodes of Evil (CBS). Not sure I will watch much more if it doesn't get better soon. The Thriller episode was a classic and I enjoyed Violent Midnight much better than my initial viewing 12 years ago.

                      TITLE-Reanimator Academy
                      SOURCE-Kings of Horror Youtube channel

The VHS cover above is the same one I saw in my late teens at Pharmor Video. Back then Pharmor had a great deal. You could get 6 vhs for 3 days for 3 bucks. I had already watched all the known horror movies Pharmor had. Saw the cover for Reanimator Academy and figured fuck it I will rent this. For some reason when I rented the movie I didn't get a chance to watch it. I can't remember why. I returned the movies and not long after that Pharmor closed.

Skip ahead to earlier this year. I was starting to gather stuff to watch for 31 days of horror. And as I have the past 3 years I went and checked the Kings of Horror Youtube channel to see if they had anything I wanted to see. Saw Reanimator Academy and ripped it. Tossed it on a flash drive. Then earlier today plugged that flash drive into my old trusty Blu Ray player and started up a film I had been wanting to watch since 1992...

This film is putrid. It is barely over an hour. And still feels so padded out. Going in I was expecting some gore, maybe some 90s style nudity and maybe a undiscovered classic.....

I got none of the three. The gore is almost non-existent. There was no nudity that I remember. And I see why this film is never talked about. It is bad. Bad acting, bad FX work and bad dialogue.

A nerdy member of a frat has created a formula that revives the dead. Two mobsters, who look and talk like gangsters in the old Looney Tunes shorts, have to revive their boss's hooker. And we get a revived skull that cracks lots of bad jokes.

I don't mind low budget horror. But only if you can tell whoever made the film was trying their best and are fans of the horror genre. This film feels like the people behind the scenes didn't even try. And the plot feels more like a crime drama than a horror film.

                      Reanimator Academy gets a F+.

Binged the American Horror Project Vol. 2 the last few days and it's good stuff.

Day 8: DREAM NO EVIL - Another great film from John Hayes. Suffused with the same sadness that runs through films like GRAVE OF THE VAMPIRE and BABY ROSEMARY, it's constructed with a surprising gentleness and empathy. Unfortunately saddled with an abominable voiceover that gives away the plot in advance and practically destroys the careful atmosphere of uncertainty and doubt that Hayes builds, DREAM NO EVIL manages to work anyway thanks to Hayes' restrained direction and a terrific cast. Probably won't be to everyone's taste, but I really liked it.

Day 9: DARK AUGUST - Knew nothing about this one going in and was pleasantly surprised. Really ambitious and accomplished for a small regional production, with great writing and impressive cinematography. Nice subtle horror that slowly builds a sense of creeping unease. Terrific soundtrack too. I'm still not entirely sure how I feel about the ending, but as a whole it's effective enough that it deserves to be far better known.

Day 10: THE CHILD - Oh boy this is a weird one. Packed with a type of persistent strangeness that comes off as either delightfully off-kilter or like something out of GARTH MARENGHI's DARKPLACE. I found most of it to be the latter, but there were enough tantalising glimpses of the former that I suspect I might warm to it more under the right circumstances. Some nice creature effects and gore help liven things up towards the end but I found it a bit of a slog at times.

TITLE-Scooby Doo Curse of the Lake Monster
                          SOURCE-Boomerang streaming app

So far there has been 4 live action Scooby Doo films. Most people know about the first two. Since they played in theaters and had a fairly all star cast. Lesser known are the 3rd and 4th films. These were made for tv and premiered on Cartoon Network. And oddly the 3rd and 4th films are prequels.

I saw and didn't like the first 2 Scooby Doo films. There is various reasons why I didn't like them. A big part of it was Sara Michelle Geller was horrible as Daphne. And Freddy Prinze Jr was horrid as Freddy. Even though Linda Cardellini is great as Velma ,it isn't enough to make up for how bad 2 of the leads are.

It was September 2009 I am on the coast spending some time with my extended family. This was before broadband internet was available where I lived. So while at my aunt's I used her internet to download all the podcasts and stuff I wanted. Back in her computer room she had a tv that had just basic cable. I was trying to find something to watch and saw listed what I thought was one of the many animated Scooby movies. Turns out it was the 3rd live action film. Which told the story of how the Scooby Doo gang met. This 3rd film was actually really good.

Skip ahead to early 2019 I had just signed up for the VRV streaming service. I got it cause it included Boomerang and Shudder, plus about 8 other channels. While going through the Boomerang app I started adding a bunch of the animated Scooby Doo films to my watchlist. This is when I discovered there is a 4th live action Scooby movie. And it has the same cast as the third film. Seeing this I added Scooby Doo Curse of the Lake Monster to my list of films I wanted to review in October.

School has just ended for the summer and Daphne has the Scooby Gang jobs at her uncle's country club. Their first night at the new job a frog monster appears and attacks people. So of course the Scooby gang wants to figure out who is the frog monster.

Also through out the movie Shaggy develops a major crush on Velma. Shaggy asks Velma out on a date. After lighting a match and Velma reacting badly Shaggy starts to realize something is up with Velma. Seems Velma got possessed by the spirit of a witch.

Of course the gang solves the mystery of who the frog monster is. Velma gets freed from the witch's control. And the film ends with Shaggy and Velma dating.

All the main cast is pretty good at their parts. Hayley Kiyoko is the stand out as Velma. Managing to capture the essence of Velma that we all know from the classic 60s and 70s episodes of the Scooby Doo cartoons.

Sadly it looks like this 4th film didn't do to well. Cause it came out in 2010 and there hasn't been another live action film since then. Which sucks. Cause the two made for TV films are way better than the tripe that came out in a theater.

Scooby Doo Curse of the Lake Monster gets a B-.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An immortal masterpiece. A perfect film.

Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3. The most underrated of the sequels and maybe the last good one depending on how you feel about the other Leatherface flick. I've seen multiple versions and I think this fan-edit by Retro Horror Remix is the definitive one.

Pumpkinhead-Surprised that this is another I've never seen. The dvd from Netflix was full frame and kind of murky. Middle of the road horror.

Carnival Of Souls-While this is a classic and I love it, I still don't care much for the scenes of Mary and the lecher. But it still delivers the creeps.

                                SOURCE-Disney DVD

Nope that is not a fake or photoshopped DVD cover. A year or so ago Disney channel greenlit a Zombie themed high school set musical film! What is odd is I never see much talk about this. Just the oddity of Disney making something like this feels like perfect clickbait for some subpar horror site.

I learned of the film when a major Disney nut I know bought it. Then forced me to watch it.....

Set in a world where Zombies are real, but it's cool they wear a device that makes them not crave brains. In this world the zombies live in one part of town and got crappy schools etc. But they are intergrating the zombies into the Human schools.

The guy on the cover is a football playing zombie. The only one on the team. He is the son of famous actress Cathryn Manheim. And is fairly well known for a steller run on Dancing with the Stars last year. The cheerleader on the right is best known for playing the teenage daughter on American Housewife. She is hiding a secret. Her hair is actually this odd white color. So she wears a wig to hide this.

Of course being a Disney film the two leads fall in love. The Zombie football guy figures out a way to override his zombie control device and uses this to lead the football team into a majorly winning season.

Well it is a musical. And the songs are horrid. With the worst being the movie theme. That is 4 minutes of the same 3 lines being repeated over and over and over and over and over again. If you are brave look it up on Youtube. That song will be stuck in your brain for weeks.

Sure this film wasn't made for or aimed at me. But the best kids/teen media will include stuff to keep the adults watching interested. And it was so hard to keep my attention focused on this movie.

                                Disney Z-O-M-B-I-E-S gets a D+.

And today Codyll' covered Billy the Kid vs Dracula
