  • THE RESURRECTED/SHATTERBRAIN (Dan O'Bannon, 1991)

This is a picture that, though I remember it fondly, I haven't seen since the days of VHS and never picked up on DVD owing to how poor the various DVD releases were, or were claimed to be.

Did anyone buy the Blu-ray released in Germany at the end of last year? I've finally caved in and ordered a copy; I'm looking forward to seeing the film again.

I got the German disc, no regrets on that. It's not a perfect movie, but an effective adaptation of Lovecraft's story. The late 80's/early 90's style is a bit much though. Picture and sound quality are pretty good, not excellent. Worth it though.

I'm a fan of this one. It plays things fairly straight and I like the slow pace. The sequence in the catacombs is excellent. I bought the German combo pack and it's a nice transfer (on the DVD, I can't play all-region blus) and finally presented in widescreen. There's some special features, too, including a great interview with Chris Sarandon.
Why would anybody watch a scum show like Videodrome? Why did you watch it, Max?

I thought the first half was excellent but the second half didn't hold up. That said, I'd love to get a deluxe version.

I think there has been a cheaper, regular re-issue of this recently. Probably misses some of the extras and the stupidly large cardboard packaging of the deluxe version though.

I would consider my self a fan of Dan. Seemed like an interesting dude in interviews and he was a pretty good writer as Dead and Buried and Return of the Living Dead has proved. But I've never seen this one as it didn't look very good. But it has Rutger Hauer in it which intrigues me.

As I said in my first post, it's been a very long time since I last watched this one, but based on those memories I'd think it was worth your time, Alex. I think there are cheapo US DVDs available that would probably be a better investment as a 'blind buy' than the expensive German BD, though.

Umm... Rutger Hauer isn't in this.

My mistake, I was thinking of Hemoglobin AKA Bleeders.

Scream Factory is releasing this in September with a new transfer
THE RESURRECTED (also known as SHATTERBRAIN) (1991) - Since the beginning of time, man has struggled with death. Now Charles Dexter Ward (Chris Sarandon, Fright Night), a wealthy scientist, may have found a way to beat it. Using an ancient diary and human remains, Ward begins a terrifying and bloody pursuit for immortality. By the time his wife Claire (Jane Sibbett, Arrival II) hires private investigator John March (John Terry, Full Metal Jacket) to halt the horrible experiments, it's too late … the dead have been resurrected! From Director Dan O'Bannon (The Return of the Living Dead). Extras in progress but expect quite a bit. We can also confirm that we will be doing a new film transfer. New illustration comes to us courtesy of Scream Factory vet artist Joel Robinson, but we will not be offering a poster on it. (Sorry!). Also, artist Justin Osbourn did a piece for an international release awhile back and his interpretation will be on the reverse. Official street date is 9/12/17 but you can get it two weeks early if you pre-order from us
