This director used to be a colleague of mine when I was contributing editor over at Metal Maniacs back in the day. I hope this lives up to the trailer!

I really liked this one. Don't go in expecting a rapid paced slam bang story though, it's a slow burner that spends plenty of time letting us get to know the characters. Their journey is a big part of the film - in that respect and the plot of tracking people abducted by savages it definitely was influenced by THE SEARCHERS. Patience is rewarded in spades though, as it really pays off in the final third of the film. Incredibly tense, gory as hell and thoroughly riveting. Kurt Russell was fantastic in this, as was Matthew Fox (I was not expecting this at all), and Patrick Wilson too. Great dialogue all through the story as well. The cannibals are imposing as hell and genuinely scary.

I pretty much completely agree with you and it's funny, as we were watching it last night I turned to Alison and asked her if she'd ever seen The Searchers because it really does have a lot in common with that movie, at least thematically. Everyone in front of the camera did fantastic work, the ending actually surprised me, and yeah, the 'troglodytes' were pretty creepy. I thought that their throat scream thing was just a little too over the top but that's really the only thing I can think to complain about - I really, really liked this one, definitely one of the best 'blind buys' I've made in a while.

I feel the same way regarding the blind buy, Ian. One of the best I've had as well. It's too bad this film didn't get a theatrical release, it really deserved one. Loved the music in it too. The tension in the final third or so was really amped up, I actually stood up and paced the room, haha. I never do that! You never knew when the savages would attack and where they would come from. There were some smart touches in there too, like Fox's character's fate and how it was seemingly setting it up for a heroic sacrifice. Excellent film and one I'll be rewatching soon.

                I thought it was great...

I picked it up about a month ago, and got around to watching it, and I was sucked in from the beginning...Yes, it is slow most of the way, but that didn't bother me one bit since I was so engrossed in it...Everything just felt right...And I thought everyone in it was excellent. Matthew Fox was excellent and he came across to me like a Doc Holiday meets Franco Nero in Companeros...

I recommended this to a lot of friends and I have had lots of positive feedback...More people need to see this...

It was OK but overlong by 30 min and the ending is pretty silly ( miraculous recovery from a likely fatal injury)....I could not buy into it for a second.

Want to see this but not sure about a blind buy. Hoping it shows up on demand somewhere soon.

                      *****SPOILERS!!!!***********

I liked this a whole lot right up to the last 30 minutes. Great characters, great actors (even Mat Fox is okay) and a very sure hand at the tiller. Loved the way violence was handled. Weapons are fast and sharp and humans are soft and slow. Loved the husbands single minded determination. Watching that poor bastard struggle was a whole lot more affecting than similar stuff in the Revenant for me.

However that ending is just too much. The sadism of it pushes the film right into torture porn territory. A bit more restraint would have have served everyone better. Might even have got the film into cinemas. Admittedly we probably all don't mind seeing Fox scalped but the audience who is willing to sit through a leisurely paced western probably doesn't overlap hugely with the one that is happy to watch a man hacked into two while alive from balls to brain.

Saw this and loved it. Agree that its combo of leisurely paced genre picture and ultraviolence probably makes it have a limited audience (similar to Crimson Peak's combo of ghostly gothic and ultraviolence) but damn if it didn't work for me (and my wife).

The one thing I disliked about B.T. was the siren-call noise. That was just ridiculous. Other than that, I thought it was pretty okay. I definitely liked it way more than The Hateful Eight.
