I too love TCM 2 very much...even though it takes a bit of a nosedive at the end......but NEXT GENERATION is a different kind of WTF trainwreck where u feel the urge to turn it off..but your brain keeps u watching because of the trauma....

Agreed. I really like Tobe Hooper's stuff, up to a point at least, and I'd say that TCM 2 is his best film. I found it a disappointment when I first saw it, after years of trying to track it down (it was still banned in the UK at that point) and finally getting my hands on a rather worn bootleg tape; it was nothing like what I expected. However, over time I've warmed to it immensely.

NEXT GENERATION? I remember watching it when it came out on home video, and for much of the running time I tuned out. I can hardly remember a thing about it.

EGGSHELLS is great. I loved the heck out of it when I watched it for the first time about two years ago :)

I drove right at 3 hours one way to see Next gen at a theater. And was enjoying it until the last 15 minutes when the film goes off the tracks. Since then I have watched it a few times ,mostly cause for years it was the only TCM that was airing on the uncut movie channels, and well it is decent. Until that reveal at the ending. I need to track down the Canadian release. Anyone know if it is the same as the theatrical release?

I remember blind buying Next Generation out of a discount bin at Walmart years ago in Canada, unaware that the US version was edited.

It didn't do much for me then, and I haven't watched it since. Maybe I should give it another shot...

I can't understand how anyone could think TCM 2 is better than the original film. I saw it in the theater back then and have revisited it several times and Dennis Hopper annoys the hell out of me every time. It's too damn goofy in many places. The original is damn near unmatched for building an atmosphere of unrelenting tension and dread...I genuinely find it astounding that someone could prefer 2 to the first one.

For me, the original just never lived up to the hype. It was one of the first films that were banned here, during the 80s and you know... I just expect more from a film titeled Chainsaw Massacre.

It is an all right film, moody and such, but it just doesnt do that much for me. TCM 2 on the other hand is just so batshit insane I can't help loving it.

                  Lol.

My thoughts exactly..banned in Uk...when i finally got to see it i was let down...probably as I had seen Evil Dead etc before i could get hold of a copy of Chainsaw.....saw clips of part 2 on that Steven King THIS IS HORROR and thought it was great..sure its goofy....but highly entertaining..and Hopper didnt annoy me anywhere near as much as Franklin from part one...plus that dinner scene went on WAY too long...

Not much love for part 2, but that sums up part 1 for me....cut Franklin amd chop that dinner scene/screaming scene down to a minute, and TCM would be perfect.

This is a weird ass thread.

                      TCM 4 is getting love.

TCM 2 is getting dumped on.

TCM 1 is getting dumped on by the Swede (big surprise).

                      Twists and turns abound.

I genuinely love the first film too, Andrew, but as time has gone by, I find that the vein of black humour in the second film resonates with me a little more. The two pictures are like chalk and cheese though :)

I like the third film too. Great cast, Kate Hodge is pretty awesome and Viggo kills in that role. Nice grimy vibe to it too even if the MPAA castrated it before its initial release.

I've seen three different versions of part 3 over the years. The cut to shit R version, the Unrated version, and a fan edit that incorporates the Unrated cut and the work print. Overall the fan edit is probably the best version and you can see what direction the director was going in before studio fuckery and just not having the time. It's a pretty good slasher with a dark streak. It's the last "good" TCM flick.
