Even though it opened December 12th, we won't have a chance to see it in Pornland, OR until January 9 or some such shit.

Easily the film I've been most looking forward to in 2014. Kind of fucked up that I won't be seeing it until 2015 though.

This doesnt premiere in Sweden until march. Someone needs to die for making that decision.

Sorry, just now saw these responses. It was very enjoyable. Also the only movie I saw in the cinema this year. I tend to put too much importance on "rewatch value" and I don't know that I will revisit this one often, but I enjoyed it a lot in the moment and would recommend it to anyone who has halfway-decent taste. (Like you people.)

Weird, I had the exact opposite response concerning the "rewatch value". In fact, more than any more I've seen in the last couple of years, I think this movie actually demands to be watched more than once. I felt like I needed to see it again as soon as I got out of the theater, just because I felt like I had missed things -- or at least needed to see it again just to cement the film together better.

Great movie, though. One of my faves of the year for sure.

Of all the movies I've seen this year, Vice is sitting comfortably in my #1 spot.
I've watched it a few times so far and every time you get a deeper enjoyment of it.

Also seeing Michelle Sinclair in a general release movie is amazing.

I've been looking forward to this since seeing the trailer a few months back. Havent seen a local release date yet though. Looks like a thriller that's escaped from, say, 1995 when it could have been released among the likes of One Night At McCools, Get Shorty and Out Of Sight. Those movies were a lot of fun.

This is just a shameless bump, but I will finally be seeing this in an arthouse theatre this saturday!

Liked it. A lot. Not exactly what I expected from the trailer, but damn good. A trippy parody of the detective story type tale, but with just the right tone of humour.

I'll just go ahead and be the dissenting voice here. I don't like Anderson. Boogey Nights was fun I guess but otherwise I struggle. 70s detectives is just so my wheelhouse though that I had to see this. I was struggling from the get go. I don't know if you guys can understand a word coming out of Phoenix's mumbling mouth but I sure as hell couldn't. It's an ugly son of a bitch too. Whacky camera work that I suppose is supposed to be a bit experimental but really comes off as amatuerish. And it's all quirky as fuck. I hate quirky. If you want to be different then have the balls to be downright strange, don't just settle for quirky. I can't comment too much on the plot- it seemed stupid- because twenty five minutes in my girlfriend shut it off with a "I just can't take it anymore!" I didn't blame her though it does demonstrate a worrying lack of fortitude. I think Brolin was good... but then Brolin is always good...

I'm glad to hear that from a native speaker. I thought my English had taken a dive when half of the time I was struggling to understand what was being said.

That being said, I liked the film quite a bit. I loved that it didn't go "downright strange" because that would have been easy. I think it actually came out stranger, more pervasive, now that it didn't overdo it. I can fully understand why it would be too much for many, though. But I think it had its odd charm plus wonderful performances and a great 1970s atmosphere. I saw it on Saturday I could already watch it again I think.

The title of the thread is off - there were many passionate fans of the movie and it did get two Oscar nominations.

That said, I found it a semi-coherent mess. Anderson seems to have difficulty ever having movies with a consitant beginning, middle and end. His best movies - THERE WILL BE BLOOD & BOOGIE NIGHTS - devolved into chaos at the end (and, don't even start on MAGNOLIA!). There are some nice acting bits, and the period atmosphere is interesting, if a bit too consciously arty. But, the photography was wonderful - and, shot on 35MM film!

I guess those who want to just let the film just wash over you may enjoy it, and the Anderson fanatics will re-watch it until they "get it", but, once was plenty for me.
