My wacky conspiracy theory: over the top promotional gag to bring more public awareness to Clowes and to Fantagraphics (aren't they in some financial distress?). Okay, I looked it up, they are doing Kickstarter campaign, and have been successful at raising funds, but that sort of thing needs momentum. Publicity never hurts.

Of course it is also entirely possible that Shia No Pants Hamster Sherlock is just a fuck-up.
