  • Tank Girl

I remember seeing this in the theater first run with none other than Jim Motherfucking Zubkavich. After the movie was over we went to an after hours booze fest at the Subway Room where there was a lot of green light and bad techno.

Shout Factory have got it headed to Blu-ray, no release date, specs or extras yet but here's the cover art.

I remember digging it but I honestly don't think I've seen it since and that was nearly 20 years ago. Writing that makes me feel old.

One of the weirdest films I ever saw. I am not sure I like it or not.

This flop pretty much sank Lori Petty's career because she was on a roll after POINT BREAK, FREE WILLY & A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN and then you never heard from her again.

TANK GIRL could've been a thousand times better. Should've hewn more closely to the graphic novel. A real waste.

I've read in a couple of places that the studio cut a fair amount of footage and the director would be willing to assemble a director's cut if ever given the opportunity. Here is some info the cut footage: http://www.twisted.org.uk/tg/movie.cut.html

Fright ball fucks up Iggy Pop.

I saw this on Ian's recommendation.

                  I hated it. :D

I saw this when it first came out. I haven't seen it since, but I remember feeling... underwhelmed. I remember this and JOHNNY MNEMONIC were both keenly anticipated (1995 was going to be the year for cyberpunk pictures) but both ended up being big disappointments. That said, I've grown to appreciate aspects of JOHNNY MNEMONIC, so a rewatch of TANK GIRL may raised it in my estimation.

Edited to add: Stallone's JUDGE DREDD was 1995 as well, wasn't it? What a year for disappointments! About the best Hollywood SF movie of that year was probably STRANGE DAYS.

I've grown to really like JOHNNY MNEMONIC over the years. Warts and all, it's a fun movie once your expectations are in check. I'd love to see the Japanese edit some day. Has that ever been available outside of Japan?

                      STRANGE DAYS is great.

I haven't seen TANK GIRL either since I saw it in the theater. Rewatching the trailer doesn't having me looking forward to a revisit any time soon. Lots of cool ideas and kind of a neat production but I can't say I care for the tone, at all. It never really comes together. Similar in a way that JUDGE DREDD has some nice production but the tone is completely wrong.

I don't think so, Scott. However, it has been in circulation on the web. I downloaded it years ago; it's a much better cut of the film, in my view - darker and more sombre in tone.

Cheers, Paul! I download a copy yesterday and gave it a watch. It WAS much better. I appreciated the tone much more.

I really liked the cyberpunk explosion of the 80's and 90's. It seemed to fade away after that, being replaced by a kind of glossy iphone looking sci-fi. For all it's flaws, JOHNNY MNEMONIC has all the elements I appreciate in the genre. Low-tech high-tech future, dark and dirty cityscapes, punk/glam rock styles. BLADERUNNER really set the tone on film. But it seems like everything came to a screeching halt once the internet took over in the new millennium. I guess the mystery was gone. It's a genre very much of it's time.

I downloaded a rip of the Japanese laserdisc back in 2004 and still haven't watched it. Saw JOHNNY MNEMONIC opening night and enjoyed it. Wasn't until about a year later that I read the short story it was based on. Normally I am not a fan of Keanu. But his detached acting style worked perfect in Johnny Mnemonic.

As far as Tank Girl, I have loved it since I first saw it years ago. Went a day or two after it opened. And my date and I were the only people in the theater. Was also the first time I saw Naomi Watts. After seeing the film I went out and tracked down some of the comics. Wish there was a nice collection of all the comics.

She's the poster girl for the Apocalypse! On November 19th, 2013, the riot-grrl classic Tank Girl will make its Blu-ray debut as a Collector's Edition Blu-rayâ„¢ + DVD from Shout! Factory. Available for the first time on Blu-ray, the combo pack includes all new bonus features including interviews with director Rachel Talalay, actress Lori Petty and production designer Catherine Hardwicke. Kesslee had better get a grip on reality and his water jugs because not even a run in her stockings is going to stop Tank Girl from saving the world!
