  • 300: Rise Of An Empire

    Ha! Well, this looks insane.

"Based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes, and told in the breathtaking visual style of the blockbuster 300, this new chapter takes the action to a fresh battlefield--the sea--as Greek general Themistokles attempts to unite all of Greece by leading the charge that will change the course of the war. 300: Rise of an Empire pits Themistokles against the massive invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes, and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy."

I think it is funny/great that Eva Green is playing the bad chick in not one but TWO Frank Miller adaptations.

Also, when the hell is Miller's XERXES comic going to come out?

My wife and I are going to see this tonight. Nathan Rabin of The Dissolve called it a "homoerotic blood orgy," as if that was a bad thing. I can't wait.

When the first came out, I thought it was shallow nonsense with MTV aesthetics. Then, a few years later, I realised that, like Miller's book, it may be laced with layers of delicious irony. Then I watched it again and thought it was shallow nonsense with MTV aesthetics. I've oscillated between the two positions ever since.

This, however, looks like shallow nonsense with MTV aesthetics. Then again...

But I'm a sucker for anything with Eva Green or Lena Headey in it. The two together? This needs a further sequel, with Olga Kurylenko joining the cast.

Sad to report that I did not enjoy this one as much as the first. As an ancient Greece action movie with modern day action movie aesthetics, it was serviceable. The sequel looks very much like a Zack Snyder movie. It has all the hallmarks of his directorial style, but it had none of the testosterone-fueled hyper masculinity that defined the first film.

Love it or hate it, it's undeniable that the original 300 was supersaturated with scenery chewing machismo, and every time one of the main characters would act and speak at a reasonable volume, like a normal human being, I kept wishing somebody would fucking shout or growl their lines like Gerard Butler in the original- or just kick someone into a well.

Yes, that film always sort of reminds me of JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS directed by Andy Warhol (lotsa bare male chests, etc) with dialogue coaching by John Milius (Grrrr), and action choreography by Chuck Norris (kicking people into walls).

Lucky man! (For the record, I believe she displays more than her acting talents in the 300 sequel. You might )

Confirmed. She goes topless once in a sex scene with Sullivan Stapleton that made me think I was watching the R-rated cut of a Brazzers porn parody of 300.

I don't think Butler gets enough credit for how great he was in the original. He had just the right amount of charisma and crazy.

As for nude Eva Green, the character she plays in the SIN CITY sequel is naked all the time in the comic. Hopefully that happens in the film.
