  • STAR OF DAVID: BEAUTY HUNTING -
it's still hard to believe that there was ever a time and a place where an exploitation film this rough, this nihilistic, would never the less have the budget to shut down an intersection in a major city, hire a huge crowd of extras and set up a helicopter shot for a scene of a woman dancing on a roof.
Yep..back when they really CARED about the exploitation that they made~!!!

Thsi was the one that started me down the long and violent road of Japanese exploitation movies.....i am forever in debt to it...What a place to start!!

    • THE TORMENT aka A BLACK RIBBON FOR DEBORAH - Marina Malfatti stars as a woman who's desire for a baby coincides with her discovering she has psychic abilities, she's unable to conceive and in fact is told by her doctor she will never be able to...days later she's convinced she's pregnant. This is a case of some good ideas that weren't developed enough. A creepy moment here and there isn't enough to carry this one, too much time spent fretting and looking vaguely distracted. Good cast sorta wasted too - Bradford Dillman is her husband and Gig Young a drunken family friend. Young doesn't seem to be acting at all as the constantly ripped concerned pal.

      • I just watched SLEEPAWAY CAMP last night and my, what a film. It's one of those movies you kick yourself for having not seen earlier. I knew the ending was going to be a powerhouse, but nothing could have prepared for me the shock I witnessed. I found the death scenes themselves fairly brutal, especially the boiling water scene. Everything about it was very cohesive and enjoyable. It's a product of the 80s to be sure, but it still feels like it deserves to be watched today far more than it probably is.

I'll third the praise for STAR OF DAVID. I will need to give it another watch someday.

I started to say "not for the easily offended" -- but perhaps its best said "not for the offendable." But for the latter camp, pretty fantastic -- a real gem in Suzuki's excellent filmography.

Also, it's still hard to believe that there was ever a time and a place where an exploitation film this rough, this nihilistic, would never the less have the budget to shut down an intersection in a major city, hire a huge crowd of extras and set up a helicopter shot for a scene of a woman dancing on a roof. (Oh, what people like Rollin and Franco might have done in their heydays had they had access to a filmmaking culture like that...)
Star of David is a fucking masterpiece. It's still hard to believe that in Japan pink films are considered as a legit form of filmmaking but in America and elsewhere it's just porn.

          • POLICE STORY 2 - Not as good as the first one, but it's an 80's Jackie Chan movie so by definition it was pretty fun.

            • Calamity of Snakes. Man, did they go through a lot of snakes making this movie. Best "Mongooses eating the fuck out of snakes set to 80's training montage music" scene EVER.

              • Blood Diner: I didn't like it but I didn't hate it either. So bizarre that it approaches a work of surrealism. The one scene that did make me laugh is when they attack that puppeteer guy at a diner and cut off his hands and he tries to drive away.

                • THE MUPPETS

Finally sat down to watch this one...and enjoyed it as a funny. heartfelt, old fashioned family movie...and a very good reboot to the MUPPETS legacy after their so-so cinematic adventures....

Had a bit more singing than I thought it would.....but thoroughly enjoyed the movie....How often can you say that about "family" films these days?

                    • IRONMASTER - By god this is the best Italian CONAN mutant I've ever seen. Umberto Lenzi (as Humphrey Milestone!) really covers the bases here: George Eastman in a lion's head cowl? Check. Primitive cavewomen with perms? Check. Apparent leper tribe that really look like zombies? Check. Hairy apeman tribe with plenty of penis shots? Check. Spaghetti western veteran William Berger as pacifist caveman in silly wig? Check. It's all here, dammit. Spot or three of gore too. This movie just races along from one jawdropping event to another. Has a goofy but catchy score from the De Angelis brothers too.

Ok, that just sounds awesome. Is there a legit release available?

                            • Finally went to the Toronto screening of the restored JAWS. We're going to need a bigger screen.

It was the first time I'd ever seen the shooting stars.

                              • Last night... Walk Hard - John C. Reilly is awesome in this movie and this movie is a lot funnier than I think most people realize. It's actually really well done and pretty gosh darned funny.
