  • ^ wasn't a fan of 300 either & I even watched it in IMAX when it came out.

    Dark Matter - Dir. Chen Shi-zheng (2007)

It's loosely based on the school shooting at the Univ. of Iowa that occurred in the early '90s by a Chinese grad student named Gang Lu. It was ok, nothing really special but I did enjoy Meryl Streep's portrayal of the vapid & patronizing "den mother" figure to the Chinese grad student contingent on campus.

Latest movie from the director of PERDITA DURANGO...good characters, weird, violent, spliced into historical period in Spain....more good stuff from the director...I enjoyed it..not everyones cup of tea though I fear...

      • PLOT OF FEAR - Perhaps this giallo suffers a bit from "one twist too many" syndrome -- the plot doesn't really hang together all that well -- but that didn't really detract for me. Great cinematography, some cool sets, and an awesome cast (Michele Placido, Clorine Clery, Tom Skerritt and Eli Wallach) made this one a lot of fun.

MY SEX JOURNAL: INTENSITIES - This Nikkatsu Roman Porno by Chusei Sone failed to engage me on any level. There was nothing I can point to that was particularly bad about it; it was just *really* tedious. It's not a good sign when you check your watch a half dozen times during a 70 minute movie.

          • Schraam - Hadn't seen this in a few years. I thought it was messed up then and I still do. Not quite as disturbing as I remember it being but still dark, dark, dark.

The Town That Dreaded Sundown was on the tee vee last night so I started watching but got tired and recorded the rest. But I did watch all of Vampyros Lesbos, Bugsy Malone and Brother's Grimm. I didn't get around to doing any Mavericking but watched a few season one episodes of Louie that I'd missed.

Most movies would. And a musical number here and there wouldn't hurt either.

                        • Had to drop what I was doing and watch THE BANK DICK on TCM last night. That bit where Fields has Shemp Howard slip bank examiner Franklin Pangborn a mickey and then takes him back to his very prim and proper hotel, where they all think he's drunk off his ass is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Even after many, many viewings I still laugh like hell at that.
I don't go to church. Kneeling bags my nylons.

                          • RULERS OF THE CITY - I thoroughly enjoyed this one. I usually expect a fair amount of grimness from di Leo, so was quite surprised by how light-hearted this one was. A lot of fun -- great action scenes and some nice comic relief.

GIRL BOSS BLUES: QUEEN BEE'S CHALLENGE - I capital-L Love this series, but this entry was a little disappointing. Not that it was bad but, apart from the first act stuff with the girls swindling the perverted monk, the movie lacked that crazy spark that makes these so much fun. Reiko Ike was particularly good in this one, I thought, but I guess Norifumi Suzuki was just on (or off) his meds the week they filmed this one. Didn't seem particularly inspired. Ending was great, though -- reminded me of the ending of the first Sasori film (which came out the same year, so who knows...)

                              • STAR OF DAVID: BEAUTY HUNTING - If you've seen some of Norifumi Suzuki's Toei films like Sex and Fury or School of the Holy Beast then the fact that he left for Nikkatsu because STAR OF DAVID was too extreme for Toei should clue you in to just how far off the deep end this film goes. I started to say "not for the easily offended" -- but perhaps its best said "not for the offendable." But for the latter camp, pretty fantastic -- a real gem in Suzuki's excellent filmography.

Also, it's still hard to believe that there was ever a time and a place where an exploitation film this rough, this nihilistic, would never the less have the budget to shut down an intersection in a major city, hire a huge crowd of extras and set up a helicopter shot for a scene of a woman dancing on a roof. (Oh, what people like Rollin and Franco might have done in their heydays had they had access to a filmmaking culture like that...)
