  • THE SEA CHASE - John Wayne may not have been a nazi but he was a German in this film. Very odd seeing him play a German ship's captain with his regular duke voice. Otherwise it's a pretty good film.

TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY - Excellent low key spy film with a killer cast. Some surprisingly explicit deaths too.

    • Invasion of the Body Snatchers - the original is still awesome. Great brooding paranoia, I love it. Creepy pods too.

      • The original and the first remake are both awesome.

1931: ONCE UPON A TIME IN NEW YORK - Tony Anthony trades his cowboy hat for a gangster's fedora in this one. Set in Depression era West Virginia, Tony talks Adolfo Celi and his men into helping him pull off a job, they decide to keep his share too. This is basically one of Anthony's Stranger films in a different setting. Has some good moments but suffers from one of the worst dub jobs I've ever heard. Even Anthony is dubbed! To make matters worse, the dubbers are not the familiar voices we all know but some very amateurish and often inappropriate age-wise folk. Richard Conte shows up long enough to collect his check then gets offed. Lucretia Love is sexy as hell and shows a nip or two.

        • Managed, somehow, to get in three yesterday:

SAMURAI I: MUSASHI MIYAMOTO Criterion's new blu-ray was a great excuse to catch up with a movie that I'd been meaning to see for years. Absolutely (and unsurprisingly) loved it -- will almost certainly watch the next one this afternoon. As for the BD itself, I was very impressed with the image quality. Color reproduction was gorgeous and retained a perfectly filmic look.

PIECES Another that I should have seen before, but just now caught up to, via the Arrow DVD. Definitely a lot of fun -- but not going to make my list of favorite slasher films any time soon.

ZOOM IN: SEX APARTMENTS The fifth in Impulse's Nikkatsu Roman Porno series of releases and one of the best they've put out yet, I think. Uber-stylish, with an obvious Italian influence (a la Argento/Bava with some Fulci style gore thrown in -- yes, the ocular trauma warning is in full effect.) Didn't really make any sense, but at 68 minutes and packed with "am I seeing what I think I'm seeing?" moments, who cares?

Possibly my favorite from the line so far.

Yeah. This and Eros School have been my favorites. But I think Impulse has done a good job of avoiding any real stinkers so far.

I dunno. Definitely love the Nikkatsu Roman Porno and have seen far more good to great ones than bad. But I've seen a few that tried my patience -- the first Angel Guts comes to mind, as does "Time Escapades: 5 Seconds to Climax."

                  Today's viewing:

SAMURAI II: DUEL AT ICHIJOJI TEMPLE -- Rare sequel that improves on the original. No mean feat given the quality of the first. More action packed, more driven, more focused. Love it. If I weren't teaching at 8:00 a.m. I'd be diving into part 3 tonight.

                  • Frankenfish- Seen parts of this 3 times on Syfy. So finally got the dvd and watched the entire film. Not bad for a low budget creature feature.

Grizzly II - Watched the workprint of this unfinished film. Not horrible, but not that good either.

                    • Sukeban/Girl Boss: Crazy Ball Game...the final installment sans Miki & Reiko but surprisingly Yuko Kano holds her own and the naked beach run scene alone makes this a must see! Another major plus has to be Harumi Tajima's spectacular non-surgically enhanced boobs on full display.

AnimEigo's Ultimate Samurai Miyamoto Musashi collection starring Kinnosuke Nakamura in the eponymous role. I still prefer this version over Hiroshi Inagaki's more renowned one.

Lo-o-ve this movie. Kano IS quite good (almost unrecognizable at first because her hair is so much longer in this one) and the score is outstanding. They could have gone ahead and made another seven of these IMO.

                          • True Story Of A Woman In Jail Continues - not as good as the first one but definitely sleazy. Well shot, interesting albeit slightly odd cast. Worth seeing for sure.

Double Agent 73 - Chesty Morgan in high def. Kind of terrifying but also awesome.

That's what is cool about the whole genre....LOADS of different takes on similar themes.....Although they are not all classics, they are all well made and original movies (although some of the themes get re-worked too often if you watch a load at once@!!!)

Still, even when the film is not as good as you would like, you can still marvel at their amazing ability to place household objects at JUST the right part of the room to obscure any offending organs!!!LOL!!
