Shogun's Joy of Torture - The last tatoo sequence is definitely pretty nuts but seeing this after the completely insane Orgies of Edo it doesn't manage to top that film's delirous climax.

The opening incest storyline is quite well done, creepy but touching.

The nunsploitation middle tale is also good with some crazy torture scenes and makes me wonder why more Japanese nunsploitation films aren't set in Buddhist nuneries like this one.

Being late 60s this isn't as explicit in terms of nudity and sex (lots of sex but a lot less nudity) as the later Ishii films but the violence is still pretty full throttle.

Spontaneous: This was a scrolling-mindlessly-on-netflix click for me. Surprisingly excellent. The seniors at a small town American high school keep exploding. Not with flames and whatnot, even their clothes are undamaged except for the mess, they just kind of POP spreading themselves thinly over anyone nearby. It's smart, fast and funny and the lead chick is very good. The basic nihilism of it recalls The End Of The Fucking World and a couple of those other recent teen tv shows. If you dug those you'll like this.

EMERGENCY: two good new movies in a day. Usually I can go a month or two without that happening.

Two black guys and a Hispanic dude are rooming together in college. One night they come home to find a very young, very white girl passed out on their floor and vomiting up a storm. After a quick conversation its decided that it would not be a good look for them to call the authorities and have them walk in on this suss looking scene. Instead they stick her in their van and dump her outside a hospital. Needless to say it all goes about as badly as this can.

This feels like a movie that probably got it's green light on the back of the black lives matter movement centering as it does on the fears of young black males from the cops. I'm guessing that will drive a lot of the audience away but it has some gut punch impact and the social commentary feels earnt. But Im making this sound like homework when what you have here is a pretty funny, definitely thirlling little film about a very bad night. Thumbs up.

Tenement - Put off this late period non-porn Roberta Findlay exploitation film for some reason but caught it late night on Tubi. Roberta's xxx work can be caustic and disturbing but she also made a number of comedies, this film has some black humour and camp elements but the sadism of the violence still caught me off guard. Should have known better, Roberta always went as far as she could when it came to violence and perversity.

I like that many of the tenement defenders include old ladies, kids and a pregnant woman. And the character actor Paul Calderon (King of New York, Q&A, Bosch) stands out as the second in command of the street gang, more memorable for me than the gang leader. The women gang members are absolute foxes which doesn't hurt either.

Spiderhead: This went straight to Netflix, or was developed by Netflix, and then buried. They've got a major Hollywood star in Hemsworth, Miles Teller who's on a hot streak and the director of Maverick which is the biggest film in the world. When I went to watch the film I expected to find it highlighted somewhere on netflixs front page. I scrolled around for a couple minutes bemused and eventually got it by doing a specific search. Not a word of advertising that I saw and then buried deep. Odd way to treat a movie that must have cost Netflix a good deal.

Anyway... The film itself is fine. Claustrophobic film about a prison being used to test experimental drugs. It's all a bit quirky. Puts me in mind of Apple's recent series Severance.

No idea if it's true but I was just reading an article that said that Netflix disappeared the film because it's strange, Netflix is in the middle of a restructure and doesnt want to be seen as the place you go to for challenging entertainment. That's giving the film too much credit to my eyes but interesting if true. The article also mentioned the upstart service is making a move to just focusing on very large budgeted productions in future.

The RInger-forgot how funny this was. One of the few Knoxville films that you can show most of the family

Frankenhooker-Net went out for 2 hours the other night so put this on. So much fun. Has to be my fave Hennenlotter film.

Cant remember the name- Was a documentary on that abandoned Six Flags amusement park in NOLA. Is on Amazon prime and interesting if you have any interest in amusement parks.

It Chapter Two-Not as good as the first part. But still worth seeing.

Ghostbusters AFterlife-Never was a huge fan of the first 2 GB films. Loved the cartoon but the movies are stuff I watched maybe 2 times. This sequel is so well made. Manages to feel like a sequel while also being a reboot. Also glad this came out so I got a chance to buy a Ecto 1 for a decent price.

Bandslam-The GF loves Disney. And this was a movie that premired on the Disney channel a few years ago. Aly Michallka and Vanessa Hudgens are in a rock band. Best part is when Hudgens and some dude break into the closed up CBGBs and the dude teaches Vanessa about how the Ramones are the best band to ever exists. Yea this sucked but she wanted to see it.

Hellride-This and Machette should have been Grindhouse II. Yea this movie as bad acting and dialogue,but so did all the biker movies this is a tribute to. FOr me it is a great film for when I want to watch something and don't want to have to think.

CandyMan Day of the Dead-Now I haven't seen the 4th Candyman film,but still feel pretty sure this 3rd film is the worst in the series. Doesnt help that the lead Donna D'errico is eye candy and can't act.

Indy And The Kingdom Of the Crystal Skull: I saw this at the cinema and immediately sought to block it from my memories. The CGI, the gopher, Shia and Harrison swinging around on vines and lassos. The aliens. Yesterday I decided to give it another look to make sure it was as bad as I remember.

It's definitely not. Hell, maybe it could even be called good. Pretty much everything that makes the originals so great is in there. The CGI is annoying but then the originals used every trick in the book and didn't always look perfect back in the day as well. I love the roller coaster scene in Temple but the green screen is often very obvious for instance. The frequently impossible physical feats annoy me still but I'd say I missed a good time the first time I saw it. Might even pony up for part 5.

RRR: Bigger than an Avengers movie, more homoerotic than a Top Gun, it's RRR. Bollywood is big business in Australia, there's always a couple on the multiplexes, but they rarely cut through to the mainstream. I can't think of another that's done so since Lagaan... With a Netflix release RRR is certainly making a mark.

This is a completely ridiculous film. I thought White Heaven In Hell was pushing it when Ogami Itto went up against hundreds of ninjas on skis. This movie starts with one of our heroes going up against tens of thousands of opponents. He just wades through the bastards hitting them with his baton. Cut to his counterpart being chased through the jungle by a leopard but never mind that, turns out he was only using the leopard as bait so he could take on a tiger and scream in that motherfuckers face. And he does it in a loincloth. What a guy! As insane as those two scenes are they're just prep for the next scene which is a rescue after a train explodes on a bridge. This one sets all new standards for WTF. I would love to spoil it but it deserves to be unspoiled. And, and, and, only once this rescue is finished, half an hour into the film do we get the opening title on screen. I'm sure packed houses in Dehli went nuts.

it's funny to watch a movie where the British are the bad guys. When I say bad guys, I mean bad guys. These guys suck in a way that you would only see Nazis suck in a Western movie. A British soldier has a gun to a defenseless womans head. His superior comes over and slaps him in the face and explains how expensive it is to manufacture bullets and have them shipped to India. So the British soldier beats her to death with a stick! Imperialistic British scum! in the real world India and England are currently playing a very polite series of test cricket. I'm hoping this doesn't sour relations...

This reminds of Hong Kong cinema in 80s/90s. Its making Indian movies with Hollywood products values and putting their own spectacular twist on it. If you click on the video I've linked have a look at the comments from proud Indians over this film. Love to see it.

The Gray Man: Netflix joins the $200 million plus club for this spy shenanigans caper with Gosling, Evans and Armas directed by the Russo Brothers.

Like an Avengers movie this is all quips and explosions. I quite enjoyed the quips. The explosions get pretty tiresome after a while. People don't seem to mind that they're just watching animations with the Avengers films but does that still work when you take away the capes? Seems stupid to me.

Anyway, it's 100% plotless. a lot of ancient European cities get destroyed as Gosling tries to protect a MacGuffin flash drive from Evans. It's the most MacGuffin-ish MacGuffin ever. You never know what's on the drive and it comes to nothing. Really just a device to string together the explosions.

Eeeh, it passes the time while you wait to die.

The Rescue: This is fantastic. There's a Virgo Mortensen film coming up about the rescue of the boys in the Thai cave but do yourself a favor and check out this doco first. The highlight here is there's a lot of footage from the actual dives and significant contributions from "Pedo Guy" and the rest of the heroes who got this done. On the news they just tell you that they anesthetized the boys and swam them out. That statement really doesn't do justice the drama of actually putting that plan into action.

This is the tensest, most gripping thriller I can remember watching and the only thing that makes it bearably is knowing in advance that all the kids survived.

A shit ton of Marvel movies. Knocked off all the ones i havent seen. So this week I've been kind of been left to my own devices as the girlfriend has gone into town to do shows. I was going to be stuck in front of a tv for a bit so I figured I'd give myself a project.

Probably the most interesting thing watching a whole bunch of these back to back is how consistent the tone is from movie to movie. People talk about these being like a television show where each movie is an episode and that's fair. If your tv magically glitched and suddenly started playing random scenes meshed together from different movies the only giveaway would be that the characters and stories don't match. Visually, tonally these films are identical. It really gives you that "McDonalds but its a movie" feel. Sounds like a knock, and it is, but still its a remarkable thing to pull off.

Probably the best ones are the Ant Man films. The concept there allows for a bit of imagination and clever visuals/scenarios. The worst was probably The Eternals. It's very long and- well at some point I just lost the will to live. Props to Captain Marvel because it had Samuel L Jackson with a cat. I enjoyed that.

I wasn't watching in any sort of order but am I right in thinking that the MCU still hasn't introduced its Thanos replacement? I'm surprised. I would have thought first movie after he was offed they would have shown what's next.

I've barely seen any MCU movies (although I have seen the first ANT-MAN) but I'm curious about THOR: RAGNAROK. It looks fun. Is it easy to follow if you haven't been watching all of them?

I loved Captain Marvel and the Ant-Man flicks. No desire to watch the Thors though, so no help there.
