  • GOLD DIGGERS OF 1933 (Mervyn LeRoy/Busby Berkeley, '33). Ingerjay Ogersray! I read Val Lewton's raw pulp novel No Bed of Her Own a couple of weeks ago, and this has some of that same Depression desperation to it: bread lines & pandhandling for the down & out men, prostitution for the women. The foreground heart-of-gold digging comic plot isn't much, but Joan Blondell & that dog Warren William sell it. The production numbers are the business here, though -- We're in the Money, Petting in the Park, and the killer Remember My Forgotten Man (take that, Herbert Hoover!).

      • Blue Rita - fairly weird even by Franco standards. Amazing use of color though. Some nice looking ladies, some weird looking ladies, some dudes stuck in a pit with green paint on them, lots of clear and inflatable plastic furniture and a cool jazz soundtrack. I dig it.

        • GANG IN BLUE (Mario & Melvin Van Peebles, 1996). Showtime GLASS SHIELD, shot in Toronto, pretty fine. Fast, hissably vicious, & under the cop story, feels as true as the text crawls claim: post-Rodney King, who could doubt it? Can't-fail racist cop scenario is only a little hurt by a clumsy ghostly KKK phantom cop revenge mythos. And what could have been Mario's show has him giving up some room for a strong turn from Josh Brolin as the rookie racist cop; the way it goes makes thematic sense, but the story seems a little off-center for it. Stephen Lang is great as Moose Tavola, the cop gangleader: hateable, believable, chock full o' nuts. Great working cast all around: J.T. Walsh, Cynda Williams, Sean McCann. Melvin cameos as Mario's rabbi, talks him down from the sweetback moment, and gets to say onscreen "I'm really proud of you, son". Bonus points: cops have their secret klubhouse upstairs of a titty bar. Mine was a good old Platinum Disc dvd, so it's probably Echo Bridge these days, and five bucks in your Walmart bin.

Thanks for hipping me to this. I really enjoyed it.

I first saw her in DOOM. She's something, alright. Plenty of Googling followed.

                    • The Woman (Lucky McKee/Jack? Ketchum), a pretty "grim" fairy tale. I actually enjoyed the dvd extras more than the feature.

followed that with The Whistleblower (2010). War on women double feature.

                      • The Fields - a well done low budget indy horror film kinda-sorta inspired by the Manson murders but which goes in a fairly different direction than you'd expect it to. Not gory, no jump scares - loads of atmosphere and strong performances. Bonus points for a foul mouthed Cloris Leachman.

I agree it is a great film, but have you seen "Blastfighter"?

                          • Blastfighter is fun. Takes a while to get going but once it does it rocks. No idea why it isn't on DVD yet.

Watching The Mist: Good film. But I remain pretty meh about the creatures and the ultra religious lady. Something about giant insects doesn't do it for me, the religious lady came off as a trope to make the whole thing seem a little different than the usual Night of the Living Dead setup.

I am pretty sure the ultra religious lady was also in the Mist novella. But I haven't read that story since I was 13 or so.
