  • Chris is gone. All the rest are there.

I watched WCCW on Saturdays on some religious channel. Aired at 6pm. the Mid South/UWF was at 7pm.

AWA was one I never saw until I got cable in 90 and caught reruns on ESPN.

AWA was the first wrestling I ever saw, I'm guessing around 1983. I know Hulk Hogan was still in there at the time, so it was right before he jumped ship. I also remember hearing Black Sabbath for the first time when the Road Warriors entered the ring to "Iron Man." But one I saw WCCW, AWA (or any of the rest of 'em) just couldn't compare. WCCW was more violent, crass and fun. I never got to see any Mid South until they changed the name to UWF and got better syndication, I guess. It aired late night on the weekend, don't remember the specifics. I just remember trying like hell to stay awake to catch it.

To get back on track to the real topic of this thread, I started watching the Netflix Griselda show. Got 3 episodes in, and I'm not sure I can finish it (even though there are only 3 episodes left). Having seen the various Cocaine Cowboys documentaries and spin-offs, this show is total fantasy.

They've turned a murderous, drug dealing sociopath into a socialist feminist icon. 99% of the men ooze misogyny and are envious/afraid of her superiority and constantly express this in an almost cartoonish way. Plus, they juxtapose all the shit Griselda goes through with all the shit the female cop chasing her has to go through. They both have to deal with being the smartest most capable person in a field of buffoonish men. Not to mention, all these sex workers from Columbia that Griselda brings in to help peddle her poison are apparently fluent enough in English to hobnob with the Anglo country club crowd. Sure, right. (If that was the case, then the education system in that part of the world must have really taken a nose dive over the past 45 years because none of the recently arrived migrants begging at every intersection in my city speak a lick of English beyond "Please, please.") Like I said it's total fantasy.

      • Black Sunday (1960). This wasn't the first Mario Bava movie I ever saw but it was one of the first, fittingly. This was the only second time I watched it, and I watched the AIP version, which I don't think was what I saw before (the first time I saw it was five years ago). In any case, it's a very interesting and memorable movie, and definitely an opportunity for Bava to make his mark from the get-go.

        • Nekromantik 2 - I've seen this many times but the last time I tried to watch this I found it so gross that I turned it off. Decided to watch it again last night and wondered why I had done that last time. Somehow the movie was both more boring and more entertaining than I remembered it being...

Thanksgiving - I was pretty into this for the first hour or so but it seemed to run out of steam a bit after the parade scene and even though it did pick up a bit it never seemed to be as good as I thought it was going to be. I'm sure I'll see this again at some point, maybe even pick it up if it's cheap enough.

Ölüler Konusmaz Ki (The Dead Don't Talk) - Been looking forward to those Turkish movies coming from Filmotronik next month and randomly put this in, not a great pick. Got the gist of it but the story didn't make a lot of sense to me and the ghost was kind of annoying with the constant laugh. One of several Turkish flicks I'm not sure I ever got around to watching, hopefully the next will be better.

          • I Vampiri: This was one of the extras on the Arrow Video release for Black Sunday, as it was a movie where Mario Bava was initially just the cinematographer, but had to step in when the real director left. I watched it simply out of obligation and didn't really pay it much attention. It is notable for being Italy's first sound horror film, and I can definitely see how it's influenced by other movies, but it didn't really grab me.

Thinner: This was only the second time I've seen this movie. I think it's enjoyable, even if the characters aren't exactly the most sympathetic, and it is a bit cheesy at points. Really good makeup effects to show the main character wasting away, and I think Robert John Burke is charismatic enough to where you do care about him, despite him not being the most moral person ever.

            • Dead Silence: This is another movie I saw once before some time ago. While it's no classic, it's still a nice, spooky little tale, well-made by James Wan, and will definitely creep out anybody who's afraid of dolls and ventriloquist dummies. Also, that main theme is really creepy.

              • Flamin Hot-The supposedly true story about a maintaince man at a south Cali Frito Lay warehouse that invented Flamin Hot cheetos. Well made and works well at the story it is telling. Appears to only be on Hulu.

Pinball:The Man Who saved it-Another Hulu exclusive. This is about the man that got the NYC ban on pinball machines lifted. Ends up being more of a story about him and the artist lady he meets and ends up with.

Both worth watching. And the latter one I want a physical copy of.

                • Iron Warrior – Grabbed this cheap and with low expectations that got even lower when I saw “PG-13” on the back of the box after it arrived. The action was about the hokey variety that you would expect from such a movie but from one that’s actually fun. Then, surprisingly, there was also a bit of blood and a lot of nudity. A silly movie but one that it exceeds expectations a bit in several ways.

Agnes (2021) – Hulu sold this to me as a horror movie but really it’s a dull drama wrapped around part of a horror movie. It starts out feeling like something I’m not going to like and then proceeds to be a mildly interesting possession movie but then it abruptly shifts into a drama more or less out of nowhere. Pretty aggravating…

Poison for the Fairies – A frustrating story about a girl and her bully/friend that isn’t very exciting although I did find the somewhat predictable ending fairly satisfying. Don’t mess with Hippie!

Carnage (1984) – I used to regard this as a lesser Milligan (haha…) but rediscovering it in the Severin set has really improved my opinion of it and increased the number of times I’ve seen it significantly. Watching it this time got me wondering if maybe this was the bloodiest Milligan movie…

Panga/Curse III: Blood Sacrifice – Even at $5 for the BD I really had to think about this purchase and it turns out buying it was the wrong move. A real bore, the main upshot was that seeing the creature in this got me thinking about Slithis and I wound up watching that this weekend too...

                  • I just watched Arrow's UHD of Conan The Barbarian and loved it. Schwarzenegger movies have always been my favorites, but I've been a bit lukewarm with CTB. I'm not sure why but my guess is that its a bit long and until this UHD I didn't have much appreciation for the visuals and music. I was drooling over every frame this time. I'm tempted to put the previous Blu-ray and see if there is a significant change to the color. There was a lot of interesting things with color this time around. The love making scene with Sandahl and Arnold has this very intruiging look that as them looking like bronze statues. Being fully engaged in the film for the first time, I was surprised by how many emotionally impactful moments the film has. The death of Conan's mother and King Osric's speech were highlights. I also really dug Conan happening upon the Atlantean king's crypt and any moment Sandahl Bergman is on-screen. And James Earl Jones is terrific. 130 minutes went by very quick.

                    • The Exorcists-DVD
This is The Asylum's mockbuster of last years Exorcist Prequel. Doug Bradley is our Exorcist. Looking like that fat bald uncle you see 2 times a year. Denise Duff is the lead nun. The rest of the cast is unknowns. Not bad for a 6 day shoot. But a big big flaw right near the end ruins the film.

                      Born in East L.A.-DVD

Was sure I had seen this before, turns out of I got it mixed up with Shrimp on the Barbie. Fairly funny but dated film. Daniel Stern steals the movie. But Paul Rodreiguiz is decent as the cousin that think the linticular painting of Jesus is talking to him.

                      • For Your Height Only - I kind of wondered how good this would be on a second viewing, assuming that the gimmick would have worn off after the first viewing a few years back, but it turns out it didn't actually wear off and the movie was even more fun the second time around. Seems unlikely that it would happen based on the disclaimer on the DVD but I would definitely upgrade this one.

I'd love to get an upgrade of the other feature on that disc, Challenge of the Tiger. We need topless tennis in HD.

I didn't remember that one and was only planning on watching For Your Height Only this time around but decided to do it anyway tonight based on the topless tennis comment and it didn't disappoint in terms of that scene or the movie overall. Good call!

                              • Cujo Kino Lorber Blu-Ray. Cujo is a movie that I've seen a number of times. It's one of my favorite Stephen King movies. This Blu-Ray is packed full of extras. It has three audio commentaries, two with Lewis Teague (I listened to the first one), another with the author of a book on the making of the movie (I listened to it as well), a roundtable discussion with Teague, Dee Wallace, Danny Pintauro, and Daniel Hugh-Kelly, the Dog Days documentary from the 2007 release, and a lot of other interviews, many of which are over twenty minutes long. Definitely worth it for any fan of the movie.
